what do you do with them? What injuries/illnesses etc have they sustained whilst doing a discipline, turned out, in stable, travelling etc?
I seem to be nosey today
) my daughter however would like to do SJ/endurance/dressage.
Currently, the horses are just schooled, hacked and jumped.
Magic has only been poorly twice, when I first got her, she had azotoria after being stabled for a week and last year she got something stuck in her gullet and had to call vet out. Mostly she doesn't hurt herself
Herbie....well, he is a total plum!
When I first got him (year ago!) he was scarred, always been picked on. He is always knocking himself, little scratches and cuts appear for no reason. Clumsy really.
As he won't load (idiot horse) I can't say about travelling, need to borrow trailer to practice him.
Magic won't go on a trailer no matter what, but lorry she walks on and enjoys.
My daughter does all the usual PC stuff with her pony, our other two are happy hackers.
Touch wood, we havent had too many problems, although one pony was off work for six weeks in the New Year with a bruised sole, and another got an abscess at the same time!
The worst thing that happened a couple of years ago was when my beautiful 7 yo Connie injured himself having a play in the field - months of x-rays, nerve blocks and finally an MRI scan showed that he had badly damaged his DDFT it was so bad there was no option for surgery, or even to just retire him, so he was pts, which was truly heartbreaking.
most of the injuries are silly field injuries which thankfully have never needed vet attention. the only major injury i've had is when my old tb broke her hind leg in the field one night and had to be PTS
He broke his leg in the middle of a flat field, whilst turned out by himself.
Skinned his legs and head rolling on twigs
Cut his nose on a likit twister thing.
Gets hives for the first two weeks of June.
Bruised soles from having his shoes off.
Knocked the ligament next to his break whilst recuperating from said break.
Lots of little bites and kicks from playing with his gay life partner.
Cut his knee and cannon a couple of weeks ago by forgetting to engage brain whilst hooleying about at great speed with aforementioned life partner.
Feet start to disintegrate if turned out in v. wet fields.
Gets mud-fever in dry fields.

What do you do SF ?

I don't ride anymore - too old
Stopped bouncing
I used to enjoy showing and showjumping.
My eldest daughter re-schooles 'lunatics' for people which would otherwise be pts. Most of the time they just needed to be a horse
My youngest daughter does everything. She has just got a new pony which her instructer said will event. Her instructer has different ways to me which i think caused my question. I am very open minded and i cannot stay in the dark ages
I look after the field ornaments and realy enjoy working with psychologicaly affected rescues - extremely rewarding
We have been lucky regards injuries/illnesses. Well i say that if they get ill they do it majorly - Basal cell tumour and salmonella come to mind
My youngest daughter is very competitive and i have to let her compete properly which has made me think 'injuries' We don't get lame horses etc. I do realise we have been very lucky.
My daughter is only 12 but has competed sucessfully at County level, even at the age of 7.
I was looking back at old dvd's the other day and there was one of her at 7 showing her Shetland in hand at a Championship at Moorgreen. She came 4th out of over 30 entrants. I must say she did very well. When i watch her i look for faults to improve things. It was the first time i watched without looking for faults and saw why she did so well. She was the only child also, but was more professional than most of the entrants and the pony behaved perfect, standing beautifully for her.
I originally put her in the qualifier to learn as she was so eager. I fell out of the horse box when she won
We did put a lot of work into the championship. The pony was a rescue
Both realy enjoyed it. There is a bit where both are ready at the box and when i say its time to go a huge smile comes across their face and off they go, running
They have also beat professionals
soory for the long brag, just soooo proud. She does not take after me - totally non competative
Her instructer said my daughter will be able to make money out of bringing on youngsters and selling them. She does schooling for other people and we always have people asking her to ride their ponies. She does enjoy schooling but also has fun and plays with the horses, have cuddles etc.
well I've only had George a year and we enjoy schooling, hacking and doing some little jumps. If we can beg transport we try to go to a few local shows and have so far done some dressage.
Injury wise, he had a bit of a tiff in the field in March and cut his fetlock deeply and had to have stitches (and ran up a £550 vet bill!) and at the moment he is being treated for his sarcoid. Touch wood that other than that he is healthy.
I enjoy hacking, schooling, and lunging. I've done some showing, dressage and jumping and am hoping to do more in the future, possibly also with some Le Trec & sponsored rides.
I've had Lady a 13.2hh 18 year old Arab cross Welsh B chestnut mare for ten years. She was a rescue case and has gone from being a nervous wreck to be a fizzy ride but otherwise perfect. In the ten years I've had her she has had colic twice, an allergic reaction and laminitis once.
Fudge is a ten year old buckskin, unregistered Welsh Cob gelding, I've owned him three years. In that time he's had choke once, one allergic reaction and managed to stab himself with a branch.
Had my 18yo boy for 6 years. He does a bit of everything, hacking, schooling, unaffiliated RC comps dressage and SJ and does hunter trials.
He's never hurt himself doing any of that but frequently seems to manage to get beaten up in the feild, leaving him with cuts and bruises.
He also one year had mites that took a long time to diagnose and in that time his legs were so itchy he took all the skin and hair off from his fetlocks to his knees/hocks on all 4 legs!
I have a coloured cob that I hack only..never been schooled. He has severe sweet itch so always looks a bit scraggy in the summer months and has various cuts and scratches. He also has a rope burn round his back leg from when soemone tied him up as a youngster using one of those long ropes with a ball on the end and he got himself in a tangle!!
Daughters pony is used for various pony club activities and local shows. We've only had once incident with her. I found her drooling one morning and after calling the vet out we concluded she must have either been stung in her mouth or swallowed something sharp. Her tongue was swollen and she couldn't swallow. A few anti.b's etc sorted that.
I also have a shetland who decided to climb a bank and jump some sheep wire only he didn't quite make it and landed on the wire with his leg through it which cheese wired his leg down to the bone. Queue 10 weeks box rest and lots of proud flesh.
I had my other cobbie for 8 yrs with only one abcess but she died from Cancer aged 13..

I now understand why people stable there horses. All these injuries from being in a field
[/ QUOTE ]
Despite my little muppet picking up these injuries in a field, he is still kept out - he loves being out, and I would much rather have a happy horse with injuries every now and again than an unhappy one.
Plus, he's so damn stupid he would only find ways to cripple himself in a box if I kept him in all the time - this is the horse who spooks at a hay tub....
My horse showjumps and does XC.... and the only injuries hes ever had are field injuries!
Only cuts and bruises and currently has a huge patch of fur missing on his leg from the field, luckily didnt break the skin so isnt hurting him. He also has a huge stitched scar on his bum which I have been told was from a kick in the field!
Ive kept him in today as hes been out all week and has a show tomorrow... wrap him in cotton wool sometimes!
But most of the time, I agree, a horse should be a horse and he's out most of the time!
Me and autumn are getting fit at the moment, going on loads of long hacks, schooling our arses off and practicing loads of gridwork etc.
We don't compete ATM the plan goes something like this - local shows over the summer due to my lack of competition experience, jumping and dressage from september-ish onwards, hoping to reach elementary by next spring (she's been there before so shouldn't be too tricky!) Hopefully next summer we might go XC and try a few ODEs, or possibly put her in foal.
I'd love to try showing but she has assorted splints/lumps/scars etc, all field injuries, so doubt that will ever happen!

I've only had Vogue for a few weeks. I waited until she was comfortable with me approaching her lying down until I rode her, she just needed some 'chill' time, and all we really do is hack. We've been doing a little schooling, but she's not too happy doing it, whereas she adores hacking, so I just employ what I'd be doing with her at home out, which is mainly working on the fact that we don't need to charge along nose first! We've popped over a couple of cross poles at home, which was a huge feat and shows how much faith I have in her already, as I don't 'do' jumping, and we're just planning on having fun really.
I also 'inherited' an obese pony, who I've been riding out to try and trim his waistline a little, it makes the neighbours chuckle if nothing else!
As for injuries, Effpe (FP, as in Fat Pony
) scraped himself in the stable I assume getting himself cast, however he was up and about by the time I saw to him in the morning, and Vogue often manages to come in with scrapes and knocks, usually clumps of hair missing, though how is a mystery, as I've never seen her walk more 5 steps in an hour, let alone hootle (yes, that is a word!) around in a manner to injure herself
