Recently (now I have stables) I've been putting the horses in in the day and then they go out at night. So in at 7am and out at 5pm. This way they are in ready to ride/drive and there's a lot less mucking out, I just skip out every few hours. They also seem a lot calmer for some reason doing this.

So does anyone else do this? Or does your yard not allow you to do this?

It justmakes more sense to me so that the horses are in ready to ride.

Yeah - ours are currently in at night and out in the day, so they get the benefit of the daylight and then are warm and snuggly at night.
In summer, we are out and night and in during the day to keep the flies and heat at bay and because (allegedly) the 'sugars in the grass are lower'...

not allowed and most people dont want to do that in summer so not allowed then either if it means your horse out on own. my horse is out at 9ish then in just before 3 - wish she could get out longer - will change to out at 9 then in at 6.30 in summer.

Mine are out at night too (they come in from ten until six during the day), they seem very happy, it means they get more turnout, but also get time in to munch on hay during the day at the moment when there is not much grass and in out of the heat and flies in the summer. It also means that being groomed and excercised doesn't limit the amount of time spent in the field and it fits in better with my work and means less mucking out and no early mornings which helps my ME

I'd really struggle to care for my two the way i'd like if they were in at night.

For the last few years we've done this in the spring/summer but this year we've done it all year round and it suits both us and the horses. We actually turn them out at lunch though so they are in at 7am and out at 1pm.

Some food for thought, my horse is out during the day and in at night which makes sense for the cooler months but not for the summer because the stables where I have my mare do not provide any shade from the sun, i.e. no tree line and no shelters.

I think if I put my mare out at night she's probably go and find someone else to live with - she loves coming in at night to sleep (she uses a bank as a pillow...). I sometimes have her in during the day in summer but in the winter I ride in the morning anyway so it doesn't make much difference.

Mine all go out at 8am. Whisk comes in at 12pm, in winter 'cos he gets bored and jumps out of the field and in Summer 'cos he gets too fat!! I ride him around 2pm anyway so it means he has had a good two hours off the grass. The other two come in around 3.30-4pm. Later in the Summer but depends on heat, flies, etc.

Mine is out during the day and in at night all year. He has access to a field stable all year round though so tends to go in there as he pleases to eat hay and get out of the rain in winter. In the summer he spends a lot of the day in there eating hay as it gets too hot for him and the flies do not follow him inside!

Why do you bring your horses in in the day during summer? Mine well two of them, the ones that compete) come in at night in winter as they're clipped out but they all (4 of them) are out 24/7 in the summer. i couldn't be doing with mucking out all through the year and think my horses would go mad if shut in when it's beautifully sunny outside and then could be lying around in the field or stuffing themselves with grass!

Are my horses spolit? They have 12 acres between 4 of them, split into 2 fields of 6 acres, a field shelter and numerous trees to shelter under. God I'd feel cruel shutting them in!

ive just started putting linx out 24/7 this week!! he normally comes in @ night from when he's clipped until we can go out 24/7 but at 'new' yard they can live out all winter although next year he will be clipped firstly in Oct (trace clip) then again later - Dec (balnket or full clip so will be in @ night from then until its is warm enough for me to rug himsufficiently whilst in the field (i.e. he isnt in his heavy weight rug during the day) i did bring in during the summer last year but prob wont this year (will see how weight goes) as he's in for upto 12hrs as he goes in/out @ 7am/pm
