I'm open to all suggestions here! My boy is piebald with lots of pink bits. He's really getting 'eaten alive' down below by midges! It must be so annoying/sore for him. So far I've been putting cream on his sheath to form a barrier as such but he's still coming in with blood on him. What can I use? What have you found helps? He's gone out with 2 fly rugs on this evening, base layer is a combo and the top one is just a standard but it has a belly cover and is a bit thicker material. They're also all over his legs so have put his turnout chaps on.

Any homemade remedies/tips/ tricks?!

He gets skooshed with fly spray too but a bit wary about where I put it as it says not to go near genital area. I've also had fly creams in the past but very few places do them now! There was a fab one out years ago, yellow tub, I'm sure it was ELC or something? But I think it got banned?

Thank you for any ideas x

I think that was summer fly cream, still available from countrywide as far as i'm aware, designed for use on sheep to avoid blow fly infestations.

I use phaser spray for my grey- he gets bitten badly round his belly too- its really strong, smelly stuff but the flies seem to hate it more than I do! :p

Hi - I have a highland with a massive midge sensitivity, especially round his ears. I use Tri Tek fly repellant all over my pony which works as a general fly repellant. A bit expensive but you only put it on every few days or after a bath etc. I'm still using the bottle I bought last summer.

Also - I know it sounds bizarre, but have you tried Avon Skin So Soft spray-on bath oil?? Get it on line from eBay. Smells strange in a nice way and keeps the midges off my boy's ears like nothing I've ever tried. Whilkst not a horsey product I'd heard it worked and had tried everything else, so gave it a go and have never looked back. It's a bit odd in that it sets in low temperatures so keep it warm. Comes in a pump spray bottle so is easy to apply and works as well on humans as it does on horses. Don't know what's in it, I just know it works and my pony is happy and relaxed in the summer now, even if he does smell a bit odd!! (He doesn't seem to mind and it's a small price to pay to keep the midges off him). Good luck.
