So what are you money saving tips for looking after horses on the cheap??

To get you started...
I get used vegetable oil from work (used for cooking chips), for free.

I spend a lot of time looking after my paddocks, poo picking and weeding etc, as good grass is free feed!

Anymore?

The pound shop!
Its great for sponges, baby wipes, vaseline, shampoo, first aid supplies, buckets, padlocks etc.........I even bought some flexible water containers in there the other day for shows.

Have your horse living out if possible - amount saved on bedding and hay is probably £60 a month.

making my own fly spray! Means i dont have to scrimp when applying it as if i run out it costs me less than £1 to make 2 litres more!

I buy kids detangling spray - normally 99p a bottle as opposed to mane and tail conditioner pricing of £ 5.00 plus ..

Buy brewers yeast from health food shops / internet stores - saves money on buying from horse shops / web sites.

Just thought of some more..............(one of my favourite subjects).

Tack sales/carboot sales. I bought a set of four leather tendon/fetlock boots last summer for £50, never been used. Looked the brand up online when I got home - over £100 a pair!

Also - trade stands at shows. I picked up two bargain rugs at Olympia this year - both top of the range Sires rugs for half the usual RRP.

:D Think how much you would have saved by not buying them at all;)

* If I don't need it - I don't buy it.

* If it ain't broke don't fix it/make do and mend (blankets have to fall apart before they are replaced)

* Share and share alike. Only the stallion has his own halter, everything else shares - halters, bridles, saddles, pads etc.

Human Hair conditioner + water = good mane and tail detangler
Normal human garlic = as good as garlic powder
Baby oil = good mane and tail detangler
Human = good for a second rug during winter
Home made fly spray
Make sure u fit vet visits I'n with other people so keep call out down
Use road works boards and cones for jumps
Use Haris fencing for a removable and cheap schooling and free schooling area
vinigar! yes normal vinegar like you cook with. dilute it with water and spray it on after you give your horse a bath. so that if he goes and gets muddy you can brush him and the dirt just comes right off. this doesnt work for grass stains. and dont use to much lol it smells awful.
When im grooming my horses tail or braiding it i simply dip my fingers in egg white, it leaves the tail looking great, plus it dries firm and shiny, like a gel! Gels down all the sticky-out hairs, that randomly stray out to the side, they can be so frustrating!, but this trick really helps!

baby powder works to cover up stains, as well as
chalk!

If you wash your pony's tail in some water and then put fabric softener on it, it loosens the knots and tangles. Then just brush it out with a comb and you're good as new.

Washing up liquid for cleaning White bits

Use a standard large wide tooth comb to de-hair a horse who's losing his winter coat. Just comb the horse, they are in 7th heaven and armfulls of hair comes out. Its a whole heap cheaper than fancy horse products!

Making your own treats - google Homemade Horse Biscuits - once you have bought the ingredients it saves a fortune, as bags of treats now are about 4 quid for well, not many!

Making your own haynets out of baling twine when you are running low - they are fairly strong.

Avon Softn'Silky/SoSoft/Softn'Shiny (I can't remember!) fantastic mane and tail conditioner.

eBay/preloved/gumtree - fantastic

Scrap tarpaulin/boards/cones for schooling work and jumping

Sharing transport when able and vets visits - same goes for farrier and dentist.
