Hi all

Please can you try to help my sister and I settle a little "debate" about what turnout rugs we should have.

Ideally I think we should have 2 of each weight (l/w, m/w and h/w) one of each of those weights having a neck.

What does everyone else think?

Also, what weights would you say each of the above should be in grammes?

Thanks in advance

I have one of each weight and they all have detachable hoods:

Obviuosly the LW is just a rain sheet.

MW is 220g Mark Todd

HW is 450g Premier Equine

If needed i put a fleece rug underneath when its really cold aswell.

However mine are comp horses and they dont live out 24/7, turnout is minimal in the winter as otherwise the fields get too churned up. So i dont have the problem of wet rugs very often, as they dont go out in the rain.

I have one of each weight and the heavy weight has a full neck. They are all the best quality rugs I could afford, and don't leak. They get cleaned and reproofed every year. My horse doesn't live out 24/7 though, and doesn't go out if it is really wet.

I have most likely got 4 of each L/W's,M/W's and H/W's.....I have rugs for everything...infact,it is a standard joke at my yard!

I have lost count of them TBH,it's now out of control....I mean do I really need four cotton summer sheets!

Concerning the grams each make and design vary so much, what would be so many grams in one middle weight for example might slightly be lower or higher in another middle weight by a different manufacturer.....Me thinks you can't have enough...that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Hmmm, my boy is out as much as possible coz he like being out but is only out 24/7 in the "summer". We have a problem with drying our rugs when they do get wet, as in there is only his stable door to hang them on to dry so when we have out lovely wet weather for weeks on end it can take 2 days to dry the rugs - eek!

P_G - those are the weights Im working on too - phew! And I think I have the exact same rugs as you or will do once I get the PE HW one

Thanks for the info both of you - its nice to get opinions.

I have one lightweigt Amigo
2 medium weights (220g Weatherbeeta) as I use them for stable too and as they take longer to dry I like to have a spare one just incase.
2 heavy weight (360g and 420g weatherbeeta), one with neck and 1 without as the neck one started to rub all her mane off so I now don't use necks unless it is freezing.

Thats my mates theory too (and mine if I could - I just love to buy rugs) however my sister has a tight reign on the purse strings so have to be sensible

I have 1 L/W high neck (no filling) for chilly/rainy days and 1 M/W 200 grms with a detachable neck for when it gets cold. I can't clip my boy so don't need a heavier rug and he is stabled over night. I will probably buy another 200grm TO rug for this winter so 1 can dry properly before going back on. If he is cold I will put a fleece underneath.

gosh, that sounds like a lot of rugs to me!
i have, per horse, a lightweight (no filler at all) summer nz, which also does the first few weeks of autumn and last few weeks of spring - one that won't make them sweat if the temperature suddenly rises, and which keeps the wind out if it drops.
medium weight (no idea how many grammes, sorry - old rambo mw) for every horse.
Fal heavyweight (Goliath, is it? the mega one) per horse, with neck cover. they live in these all winter.
that's it.
i have a few spares lying around if i really need them, but hardly ever do.

My lad has a m/w high neck and a h/w full neck.
Both were bought cheaply (horse market and ebay - no fancy brand just very cheap and i love them both he prefers them to the expensive ones i bought him!)

Mine have two H/W's with necks each, a M/W each and a rain sheet each (both no neck). Also both have fly rugs for summer. I've two Aspen Combo HW's and 2 Masta H/W's,the rest are weatherbeeta something or others I think.

I have two light weights (each with no fill) as mine aren't clipped and also one medium weight (220g) each, one in between (300g) each and one heavy weight each (350/400g fill). I try to go for 1200 denier ripstop outers as Fudge trashes his rugs and prefer, weatherbeeta, shires, rambo, rhino or fal rugs.

I don't have a lot, but George is only going to be out during the day in the winter and will only have a minimal clip, so I have a 115g (I think) MT Autumner rug and a lovely brand new weatherbeeta taka 220g high neck - no spares at the moment as I'm skint!
