your new horses

I didn't have a saddle for mine, so the saddler came the day I got him. Had to ride him for the saddle fitting anyway, so carried on each day from then onwards! He didn't seem to mind at all - just gets them into your way of life and routine from the start.

I had Jerry on trial so rode as soon as I could - I think it was the day after he arrived - as I wanted to ride as much as possible while I had him on trial.
He was very chilled out though and only moved half a mile down the road!

Mine had only been broken a month but had been ridden every day so i carried on riding her every day for about a month and then had to go into hospital so didn't ride her for three weeks and then I just got back on her (must have been feeling brave that day) I rode her for three days a week for the next few weeks not doing anything other than walk and trot and then the weather changed and the nights got dark so I decided to let her have some time to mature and put on some condition and spend more time getting to know her. I'm back to twice a week riding her now and her whole attitude is much better towards me but i would always ride a new horse as soon as I had it - you don't take a horse to a strange show and not ride it.

I didn't have a saddle for mine so I spent a week lunging. He was a b*gger to fit a saddle to (v.skinny TB with v.high withers). I was lent a dressage saddle as it was the only thing that fitted & started riding in it as soon as I got it.
I've always been of the opinion that you wouldn't take a horse to a competition & leave it for a few days to settle in so why do this with a new one. I do, however, understand that there will always be exceptions to the rule.
