What are your reasons for using, not using a standing martingale for jumping?

I personally prefer a Standing Martingale as like simplyhunting I don't like the fact that a Running Martingale has an effect on the mouth.
I'd rather have the horse get a sock on the nose than a sock in the mouth.
I've not found them restrictive - they have no action when the head is lowered and allow the horse to stretch. I do however use the old type of Standing that is an independent piece of equipment, with its own neck strap loosely fitted - not one attached to the breastplate. On the breastplate I find they can be too short.
It used to be stanard practice to jump and hunt a young horse in a standing martingale. It only came into disrepute when people started tying the horse's head down, rather than fitting it correctly so it only comes into use when the horse's head is too high.
Whatever works for you and your horse, I prefer NOT having to use one and I prefer to ride my horses in simple tack but that's not always possible.
I use a running martingale on my loan pony but wouldn't hesitate to put a standing on if she really needed it
Too many people using the them to drag the head in rather than what they were intentionally for, to stop you getting an inadvertant broken nose![]()
