Ours is 15 and a half. Sorry if you're above this weight but I think people heavier than this shouldnt be allowed to ride unless its a VERY special type of horse, like a massive shire with no back problems.

I don't completely agree Flamehead - my 16.2hh warmblood carries my 6'5'' OH, who weighs just under 18 stone, out on quiet hacks with no probs. Don't think I would want him jumping, but ok for gentle hacking and schooling.

The main thing is that Tom is in balance, isn't 'fat' per se and wobbling about, he is just a tall, strong man, so shouldn't really cause problems to a fit and healthy 16hh plus middleweight horse. I think you have to look at the individuals, both horse and rider.

I agree totally with this, for example I wouldn't put much over 9 and a 1/2 stone on my little 14.2 mare, however I know 13.2 chunky ponies who carry like 13 or so stone so I think it depends on indivuals, duration of ride and ability/balance of rider.

It depends, some skinny people ride like a sack of spuds and some bigger people ride very light.

My RI lets me use her son's old 13.2hh SJ ponies in lessons and she has a few draft types for heavier people.

Ours is 15 stone if your 5ft11+ and a fair bit less if you are smaller. It totally depends on proportions. As for pickle around 15-16 stone shouldn't ride thats ridiculous! My dad is 6ft3 and around that weight, he is however incredibly fit and healthy, he goes to the gym every weekday and then goes on 12 mile walks after 1.5 hrs of riding lessons in the morning. He does just ride our horse Pickle, but Pickle doesn't struggle at all, he jumps and does everything quite happily.

The rs I did my NVQ at, had a weight limit of 15 stone. I was 15 1/2 stone at the time (pregnancy weight that just refused to come off). I don't think the owners or the instructor believed I was that heavy (I'm tall at 5'9"). I rode a 15.3 and a 17.3 there without a problem, but then, I did know how to ride.

I'm 13 stone now (weight is creeping back on me due to age!!) and although I have my own horse (15.3 TB), ride regularly during the week, ride my bike everywhere (I lead an active lifestyle), I'd be too heavy for most riding schools! As far as I know, I'd be "too heavy" for a hack at Hyde Park stables where there weight limit is 12 stone!

now befor anyonce else starts a you cant ride cause your so and so weghit dont! this is so people get a idea of the weghit limits at RS around the contery.

I was 18 stone and yes i rode so never say never! i rode a horse howm carried me but afder 45 min was tossing her head and grunting so i dismounted and walked. Always look for the sings and if your 16 stone+ dont ride if the horse is struggling!

I think thtas stupid sorry, what happed to all the cobs? and the HW Cobs. no i am not old! we have a horse who sould carry 20 stone when shes fit.
Go to
If anyone lives near swindon
South cenry riding school Rocks, they care. Oh and the owner is mad LOL and old shes seen it all!

We have had quite a few experiences abroad where riding places say they don't take over, say 14 stone for arguments sake, then Tom shows up (at considerably more than that, as I said earlier) and they don't even blink - just pop him on some Ned with no probs. We got lots of that in the States this year, where people are more used to larger adults riding relatively short quarter horses anyway. People often don't judge weights correctly at when looking at folk (as you said sidesaddlegirl), and usually don't care if the person can ride, so long as the Ned isn't sagging in the middle!

Weight limits are weird, when I went western riding they said a weight limit of 13 stone for their pure QH's (I guess western tack is heavy) but all 15stone of me rocked up and they didn't bat an eyelid. Admittly I don't look 15 stone (well I'm more than that now post exam plus unemployed weight!

) as I dress and hold myself propperly but still.

I've been overwieght since the age of 10 but never been called up on it and I've ridden at lots of schools and trekking centres.

Agree, commen sense goes a long way doesnt it?
There is a difference between riding your own and a RS horse though.
A RS horse will be doing a lot mroe workt hen most private horses, which means more wear and tear so it's sensable to ahve a weight limit under what they can really carry well to help minimise any problems down the road.

I also hit the 18 stone mark nto so long ago

have got down to 16 stone 5 in the last 2 months and much happier for it,but wont be happy riding untill I am around 13.
There are RS's that would be happy to take me and no-one belives I weight as much as I do(am 5"11) but I know how much my own balance on foot has improved since some of the flab has gone and think it is unfair to ask a horse to carry a fat, unbalanced rider.
Heavy and fit on the othe hand,is a completly different matter. My OH is 625 and built like a brick sh1thouse,at 15 stone he looked very skinny,at 18 he looked good-muscled and fit and owuld have been much easier for a horse to carry then a 10 stone sack of spuds type rider.

I think the local RC is 13.5 stone. I agree with it for beginners- as it is tough for horses carrying 15 + stone when the rider has no balance and cant rise to the trot etc. However, I think once the rider can ride effectively then a higher limit is acceptable. Now I understand - how can this weighter person ever learn? Well I cant answer that, but having done some teaching in a local RC the poor horses that do 4 hours a day on sat and sun- if they took over 13.5 stone for those four hours with riders wobbling about on top im sure they would struggle to maintain their forward goingness. Bu this is just my opinion.

my OH is about 15.5stone. it varies from 14.5 to 16.5, but usually around 15.5. he's 6ft tall.
but, he's by no means 'fat' and can carry his weight well. he's been on riding weekends etc, where, had they asked him, he probably would have been over their official limit, but he doens't look it, so has never been asked.

Good point actually, my OH is about 13stone and he rides much "lighter" than me - I guess it depends on how you hold yourself and how the horse would cope as well.

I'd hope most instructors would have the guts to tell someone to get off if the horse looked like it was struggling!

I've had a horse 'go lame' on a fat rider before - IMO she should never have been allowed to ride, but owner insisted. I would guess her weight was around 17 stone, although I think she claimed it was around 14. Poor horse, who incidently carried my 15 stone ex perfectly well (he was 6'5'') just wasn't at all happy so the horse 'stepped on an [imaginary] stone' and the lesson had to end! Owner was told in no uncertain terms not to re-book her, I think he told her that his 'only weight carrier' was lame and would be for a while!

It does definetly depend on the height of the rider and the way they carry themselves etc. Pickle is on working livery at a RS and the weight of his riders is moniotored, I have never seen anyone I was unhappy with them riding him though.

I think the official limit is 14st, but there are some tall, solidly built men who ride there, and I'd be very surprised if they weren't quite a bit heavier than that. They tend to stick to the bigger horses: there's several IDx types over 16hh. I think it comes down to common sense, and the individual. The weight limit seems to exist more as an official way out if they really need to exclude someone, I'd guess. I've never seen it happen though.

My friend started riding again post-pregnancy at about 14st, and she is very well balanced---school horse (mediumish cobby type) had no problems whatsoever.

10,12 and 14st, and there aren't mean tot be any exceptions. Resulting in one male rider who is a capable rider, and rather tall and well built for his height (average size I meant it that he isn't a rake) was not allowed to ride the horses which included 17.2 pure IDs, and other weight carriers so in order to ride in his modules (college RS) he had to purchase his own horse.
I agree with weight limits but some people are naturally very fit especially if they are tall which may place them over the weight limit so I do think this is where they need to be overlooked.
Having said that when I started uni I was having weight problems due to my contriception and was 12st with riding gear and was able to ride 10st limit horses, they are meant to re-weigh every term but they never did and I was able to ride all the horses and my weight was never questioned.
