about my OH's horse who is giving us cause for concern. Just recently she has started to refuse her hard feed in the mornings, eats next to nothing in the way of hay overnight and her general temparment has gone downhill rapidly so much so that she kicked my OH the other day (never ever even had any threats to kick!). As soon as anyone gets near to her she starts tossing her head and snapping her teeth, this continues through grooming aswell. She does have mild kissing spine which doesn't usually bother her now.
This morning he took her for a hack through the woods where she walked into a tree!....checked her eyes, but can't see that they look any different to my horse's.
Her routine is the same as normal, out during the day and in at night, no change in feed, hay the same as all the year round, exercised 3-4 times a week. Teeth were done about 3 weeks ago. Have not discounted the possibility of low grade ulcers?

have you contacted your vet? or will you be getting out first thing tomorrow?
I would be very concerned about walking into a tree...as for low grade ulcers causing that im not sure its likely.
Could be her KS is causing more trouble now its cold, that would explain grumpiness and not wanting to eat. But as said to start i would get vets out

Had spoken to vets last week about the not eating much when she's in, they weren't overly concerned though as her temp was normal and she hadn't lost any weight. This evening she still weighs the same and her temp is still normal. She has a small lump on her back where her spine kisses which tends to get hot and she objects to any pressure around it if it's bothering her but there has been nothing to indicate that at the moment.
I will call the Vet in the morning though about walking into a tree.

never heard of a horse walking into a tree....... like blindly face first????
i know many mares are having trouble with there seasons....not knowing where they should be!!!! and really upsetting them.....could this make her feel uncomfortable/put her off her feed????

Apparently so! I wasn't there so didn't actually see what happened, he told me that he was walking her in-hand to cool down on the way home when she had her head almost to the ground snuffling in some leaves and just head butted the tree so to speak! His words not mine.

That's an interesting thought about her possibly being in season, she is very mareish at those times so could be that - just didn't think along those lines at this time of year.

my mares' seems much worse than normally, really flirty and going for any boy within a 10m radius of her!
