I have been doing things with my 3 year old to create new experiences to build confidence and help with bomb proofing. But wondered what your top 5 ideas for groundwork with a youngster were....please list....!
Teaching to stand still
Teaching back up
Introduce to puddles, traffic etc
Teaching to load (if you have access to a lorry or box)
Teaching to stand nicely for the farrier
1. Long reining and leading out on the roads and tracks
2. Going to an in hand show class
3. Hiring an indoor school and travelling to it in lorry/trailer
4. Bomb proofing with bicycles, dogs, lorries, tractors, blanket on a rope dragged on the ground (last was the hardest, she thought it was her baby and wouldnt let us take it out the manege...)
5. Both of you jumping over wee jumps together (just in headcollar)
and
6. Lots of chill time and short sessions of the stuff above!
Agree with everything mentioned so far although the boxing to an indoor school could be tricky for some people - me, for example. I don't have transport and there are no indoor schools anywhere round here and I don't know of any outdoor schools for hire either.
I also do things like leaving full bin bags around; tying plastic carrier bags to fences and bushes and letting flap around in the wind; walking over plastic; dragging empty feed sacks around their feet and over their back and head.
Tieing plastic bags to the roller when lunging or leading, gorse bushes round the legs and bum, get them used to dogs and other animals if you can! doing stuff in all weather conditions ie rain and wind, it good if you can get to do stuff with another older (pref sane) horse that will help too
