zebra rugs - any experience?

I've not used that one but have a Maxima zebra rug which has proved very good for my itchy one and quite a bit cheaper. The stripes do seem to keep the flies away.

Does anyone have any experience with using the fly zebra rugs? http://www.bucas.com/products/buzz-off-zebra/

Need to buy a new fly rug for my TB

I have this rug for my one of my horses, it is a good rug and is thick so not like some of your cheaper rugs that rip easy. The only problem i had with it was that she gained a bit of weight and because the belly strap is elasticated it rubbed her a bit so had to take it off for a while. But if your putting it on a TB that doesnt gain weight as quick as a halfinger then yes buy it! :)

we live next door to a wild life park. visitors can see in to my horses field. Was thinking about getting them a Zebra rug then they could be an extra exhibit!!

None at all, sorry, but I can see people buying these just so they can have a zebra in their paddocks, whether the horses need them or not.

I know of at least half a dozen 12 year olds that would buy them - just because. If I put them on my horses it would cause traffic accidents for sure, people would be so busy rubber necking that they'd be in the ditches, or through my fences, as they came past.

Georgia, out of interest, was there any "WTH?!!" reactions to the rug from other horses?

When she had the face mask on as well yes! :D But after a couple of minutes they realised she wasnt a zebra and have since been fine! (Wasn't my choice of rug it was my sister!) So now i have one horse in zebra and the other in a grey fly rug that looks like shes a knight! :D It is funny the looks i get when leading them through the yard but everyone since loves them! They are like a comical double act!

I've always fancied one of these but can't justify the price as too many bushes and trees in the field that fly rugs get ripped on. Just FYI if you are going to get one, Hope Valley Saddlery have them in the sale at the mo so you could save a few quid!

I have tried them and find they come up quite small sizewise and also because the material is thicker than most flyrugs can be quite clingy on really hot days. The belly wrap also doesn't stretch that much for bellies full of grass so i'm not convinced they are overly comfortable if your horse is chunkily built unless you buy AT LEAST 1 size bigger. On the plus side they do deter the flies and because they are thicker they don't easily rip. The mare wearing hers was avoided like the plague for a couple of days until the others got used to her new colouring!

Oh why not Enfys? Or what about a compromise and get a zorse?

The zebra in question is an ungelded (retained testicles) 3 year old, green broke, 450km away, and comes with a donkey friend. I can't have male equids too much hassle. Anyway $5000 !!

I put a zebra rug on one of my shetlands that lives in a field between a main road and a motorway. The amount of people round the town who have stopped me and asked where I managed to get a zebra from is unreal! It got quite tedious but you have to see the funny side of it. A zebra with a fully black head...

I had one on my gelding, and it certainly seemed to do its job.

However, mine was a different brand, and I wouldn't recommend Bucas. I have one of their fly rugs, and it's still in the pack three years later. It's far too hot and heavy for summer days.

Just got a zebra rug for my little sweet Itch pony....just a cheapy.. £23.00. I got it as a cheap spare rather than anything else

I'm constantly tempted by these. We've just moved to a yard not far from a zoo. My only worry is that someone might report him as an escapee...

I wouldn't use one because the black strips will attract the sun and will make the horse warmer than it already is! white is better as white doesn't not absorb the sun, therefore they are less likely to over heat!

Funny coincidence I just washed my Po's today ready for the sunshine (yes I'm hopeful) , going on last year I ain't sure if the pattern makes any difference, but it looks snazzy :-)

My pony is black anyway lol

does anyone have any experience with the Maxima equestrian one

Yes I bought one last year and it did a good job and survived the summer intact :)

I have the Bucas one.
Yes, it's ok - I bought it in a sale though and have to say I would not pay the full price for it.
It fits ok - falls to one side slightly (all my Bucas rugs seem to fall to one side slightly) and the belly pad is very snug... a bit too snug if she's got a belly full of grass. Does it keep the flies away? Dunno - can't say there's a noticeable difference...
