Why is it so hard to find a horse that is safe hacking alone?

I personally think that most people start training horses and riders in a sand school, so that is where most are comfortable. The more time a horse is trained in a sand school the less time out hacking. So lots of horses especially younger horses do not get enough experience. Hacking...

    Problem hacking

Nothing to worry about, from my experience it is normal.

    Young Horses

I have a 4.5 year old and I have been riding him now for a year. I have always hacked him out. I personally think you can not do enough hacking. He does everything. Bomb proof in traffic, tractors, motorbikes, bikes, dogs, buses, flapping plastic bags, going in front, behind, slow gentle hunt...

tell me about hoof boots please !

When I got a front pair a year or two ago I only had the choice of old macs (as my pony's feet are round). Which have been good but I also have neoprene gaiters. Some companies let you hire a pair. I would do this if I were you. I have heard that easy boot gloves are good aswell The websites...

    Affording two???

I keep my two out 24/7. Pros- I can ride out with friends, if one is broke I can ride the other, they have company, if training one the other is a good role model. cons- Double the cost and time to keep fit two and if you are not careful they can become heard bound and jealous. I love having...

    chaffing horse!

How come she is getting poo there? Is it runny? Maybe she is on too rich grass? This is needs to be sorted ASAP to avoid her getting sore in the first place. I would use Sudocrem if I were you but there are plenty of other creams for equines. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted soon.

Qs for those who have backed own horse/s

Probably not many people would agree with me but here is what I have done and have had very little problems: I got my horse at a year, did lots of work on the ground, then turned him away. At 2 years lead him from the ground on hacks out. Then turned him away. At 3 years lead him out whilst...

    Advice with youngster.

Why can you not leave him in the field? I started leaving my yearling in his stable when I rode out and he did the same as yours and I think they can do more damage being so confined. In the field he can run around and let off his steam. I have done this with my youngster since he was a...

Young horse starting to kick out-how to solve?

Thank you. Yes I agree. I had a ribbon in his tail and some ignored it. There is no rush at all! Thank you for your advice. I will be hacking as normal for a couple of weeks and slowly introduce a few more horses and rewarding for good behavior when around them. I do not need to hunt this...

New horse! In pain or testing me????

This sounds normal. I think he is testing the boundaries as some horses have been known to do. Do not feel defeated if you have to get off him and lead. I some times used to lead the horse half of the hack then ride the other half. If you want to build a bond I sometimes go into my horses...

Young horse starting to kick out-how to solve?

He is very good alone or in company with about 2 other horses. Again he is at the front or behind. He has never been in a sand school and is hacked out 3-4 times a week either alone or in company (seems to be confident and chilled out). He was lead on hacks since he was 2 and a half ( then...

Young horse starting to kick out-how to solve?

On Monday and Wednesday I took myrecently backed 4 year old out with my other sensible horse hackingwith about 12-15 other horses. He was veryexcited and put in the odd buck (just out of excitement). On Monday he tried two kick two horsesbehind him and caught one horse who went lame. Then on...

Getting a nervous horse used to clippers?

I agree, I used an electric tooth brush with my horse and it worked. I ran it all over his body before even thinking about clippers. Hope it works with yours too.

Barefoot people - how many self-trim?

I would love to be able to do this. I went on a mini course last year but I still have not got the confidence to actually start to touch up and sadly I do not know anybody to help near by-not even my trimmer. Horses are both bare feet and ridden daily. They wear themselves down but can get...

What did I do wrong? How can I improve?

No I did not know you could ask the judge for feed back. He had a class straight after. How would I go about getting feed back? Waiting until the end of the day and asking them? Thanks
