Is a bucker always a bucker

I once read an article that suggested that whether a horse bucks or not may be affected by his genes. It suggested that a horse whose genes where inherited from a line which may have originated from wooded areas would have used the 'buck' to protect itself from preditors while horses which lived...

Recommendations for a horsebox respray anyone?

Hi, we have recently had our horsebox resprayed and they have done a brilliant job on it. Cost was about £1500 and they also had to do some work on the body and replace some aluminium. If you choose metallic paint, the cost will be about double that of non-metalic. We went for black on top and...

    Liver Damage?

Does your horse graze any wet ground? If so, what about liver fluke? There has to be dampness because the life cycle is through a particular type of snail. It is not commonly recognised in horses but it can happen especially if grazing is shared with cattle/sheep.

    Sarcoids

I had a horse with a sarcoid under its belly. I had a Homeopathic vet take a look and she prescribed a treatment. After a couple of weeks the sarcoid dropped out, you could see the hole where it had been. Never had any problems afterwards. Have had good results with other homeopathic treatments...

Mare Kicked Foal Accross Stable Cause I Put A Rug On Her

I know someone who put powder on a foal because it was itching and the mare turned on it a really kicked it. I think the mare ceased to recognise it as her foal. I would not put a rug on your foal, it will be fine if it is fit and healthy. Much safer without one.

Twitch...... Cruel or better than fighting?

I think it is much better to use a twitch for 10 minutes at a time than struggling with a horse or getting hurt. The twitch causes the horse to release endorphines and so they relax. When you apply the twitch you should always stand to the side because they can sometimes strike out. I know...

    Conifer trees safe to eat?

I thought that conifer trees produced turpentine in the winter which would definitely be poisonous if a horse ate any amount of them. A small amount would probably not harm them. I would run an electric fence around the trees just in case.

    Swelling of Cheek Bone!

When we first bought my horse, she came in with swellings either side of her face(at the back of the cheekbone and slightly towards her neck). She looked like a hampster ! She still comes in with them sometimes. I took her down to my vet and he recognised them immediately. Apparently it is to...

    Best Short Boots?

I bought some Ariat's off ebay. I cannot recommend these enough. The soles are made with special technology and I can just wear mine all day. I have the ones with the zips up the front and they are fantastic. I think I paid just a bit more than £40 from ebay because they are well over £100 new...

Collaspes when saddled up - now V concerned

We used to have a pony which did this. We decided eventually that it was a panic when the girth was tightened. We would put the saddle on with a loose girth and walk her round and very gradually tighten the girth. We would probably do this over 5 minutes or so. This worked for us as she did stop...
