help!!!!!!
i have tried everthing : diamond white shampoo, baby shampoo, head and shoulders, fairy, daz, net curtain whitener, stain remover and my mares tail is still a yelllowy/brownish colour!! :(
anyone got any other suggestions please??
i would be very gratefull xx

I have been using vinegar on my mares tail warm to hot water plenty of vinegar and stand with tail in bucket if shell allow leave for 5-10mins then wash out using purple shampoo is making a difference to mine pulling the yellow out but does need to be repeated probs once a week. we arent perfectly white yet and still have some yellow bits but definate improvement.. might be worth a try.. xxx

Spray with Lyn Russell stain remover and leave for a while as you potter around doing other things. Then use the Lyn Russell shampoo (the purple one), lather u a good scrub, leave again a little while, then a good second scrub and rinse well in buckets of warm water.

Repeat if needed, but usually works a treat. My boy is the poo rolling master and this brings him up beautifully. Good luck :)

I was riding a mare with a grey tail for someone for a while and was OBSESSED with getting it white. I smothered it in ketchup everyday then plaited it to the bottom - I'm not sure if ketchup works (with everything else I was using too!!) but I think its the high vinegar contents in a consistency that stays on the tail. I then washed it daily for about 2 weeks - firstly with fairy liquid in boiling water (obviously only on bottom of tail!!), then for a second wash I used the old granny purple shampoo you can get from chemists - can't remember for the life of me what it was called but they do a weekly "intensive" one. I did use fabric whiteners a few times (obviously very careful not to get on dock or legs!) but personally didn't think they did much other than dry tail out. Then lots of conditioner!!

I didn't get it perfectly white, but it was a hell of an improvement. I also banged it as short as I could get away with to try and get rid of stained ends. To then "maintain" I washed 2x a week with the purple shampoo, then LOADS of conditioner, then leave in condition/coat shine (with the theory dirt would "slide off" more easily). I kept it permanently plaited so that when she poo'ed/wee'd (the wee is the worst!!) her tail tended to be lifted out of the line of fire rather than strands dangling in. Some people use tail bags too - I think prevention is easier than cure!!

Spray the tail with baby oil for several days. Then - wash in hot water with fairy shampoo. Then shampoo with usual stuff (I use human shampoo and then conditioner). Spray with Lynn Russells de-tangler and brush through... Comes up the best for my white mare. Tailbags are great - as long as you don't have a mare that dribbles "poo juice" into them whilst its on......

My grey cob thinks he's a rhino, I used dirty beastie with warm water and it's amazing. It says to dilute it in a bucket of water but I don't and just scrub it in.

Small tubs of horribly expensive " blue rinse" powder in the rinse water( warm)', hold tail in it for 30secs... Goes from dark yellow to glow white ( and lasts 36 seconds but never mind")

Wash with normal white horse shampoo. Rinse. Soak in half a bucket of warm water with 8 denture tablets for 10 mins/til you get bored (10 mins feels like **forever**). Rinse. Shampoo again. Should be dazzling white.

If you wash it every week to 2 weeks, it will get whiter. Put a tail bag on it in winter.

Oooh, those are good ideas - thank you!
Was a bit dubious about buying the blue rinse as they are so expensive but if they work its soooo worth it! :)
Never thought of denture tablets! Will give them a try xx

Wash using soap flakes. Rinse. Wash again using tescos/asda own brand value shampoo. Do a final rinse with Equine Blue (if they still do it!)

Wash it as normal. Then get a handful of caster sugar and rub it into the tail between your hands-really work it in and repeat all over It also gets your hands baby soft!

To get My show horses tails white there's only one ' recipe ' very hot water , daz detergent , Wahl diamond white shampoo , a tiny squeeze of fairy and then hydrogen peroxide ( brought cheaply from chemist ) mix it all up in a bucket and then put the tail into the mixture but DO NOT get any on the dock as is very hot !!! Leave it to soak for a few minutes then rinse with water and wash again with diamond white shampoo and then use a conditioner . It works a treat :) x

I might get shot here ;)

Wash the tail with fairy liquid in BOILING water, then spray flash bleach kitchen cleaner on it, chuck it in a black bag and secure at the top. This works, but what works even better is if you can get a hair dryer on it at a medium heat ( low blow pressure) it activates the cleaning agents even more and STRIPS the hair of any yuk. Wash, condition, voila!
