Thank you both for replying.
I have always had an agreement with my vet that every 6 months they check him & we chat about if its near time or not for him, 3 weeks ago the vet was happy that he wasn't getting to a point we were dragging him on, but my heart tells me otherwise.
He is always...
In all the years of having horses, this is the first time I have had to plan having a horse PTS.
Jay is 25 yrs old now, he's been retired since 2009 due to suspensory damage, he now has arthritis in all 4 legs, gets cellulitis at least twice a year, struggles with mud fever, doesn't heal well...
My boy damaged both when he was hunted, he had a year off, came sound, did 2 years hacking/schooling/ jumping then re did both of them in the field. He is 24 this year and has been retired for 7 years now.
Thinking of you today.
My mare was PTS 2 weeks ago, she was different because her intestines had ruptured so it was quite traumatic to watch as they couldn't get a vein as her whole body shut down, she wasn't in pain as she had a huge does of pain killer before it happened, it just took around...
My yard does it per day then times the days in the month, but for that type of livery with ad lib hay and straw for all 7 days, muck out/turnout/bring in/fill nets for 5 of those days it would be £394 for a 31 day month
I moved from my own field and stables to a very big yard so my horses could have a herd environment to go out in as that's what suited them, personally I would have been happy to stay on my own little yard, but I moved for their mental health.
Thank you everyone. This winter has been the worst I have had in a long time after my big lad got kicked and had 6 weeks box rest, then cellulitis and now my little Fizzy.
I have lots of amazing memories of her and that's keeping me going x
My little girl had to be PTS on Tuesday evening after badly colicing over night and her intestines rupturing.
She was only 21 yrs old and I had owned her 16 years, so she has left a huge Fizz shaped hole in our lives.
Turn out is always done by staff mon-fri and a few like me have turn out 7 days, you can text the staff that morning to turn out sat/sun or write in the book. Bring in is extra, if your not at the yard when the horses are getting brought in the staff do it anyway and you get a £3 charge each...
I have 3 retired, 2 are with me on livery and the other is a companion. Its hard, all the work but no riding at the end etc. As long as mine are happy and pain free they will stay with me even if that means I don't get another horse to ride, if we get to a point they are in pain and meds aren't...
My 17hh refuses his feed with meds, we dilute in warm water, then mix with some golden syrup and put in his feed. I sometimes syringe but tbh, its more hassle than its worth when he will eat it with syrup.
