I was at a place where mares and geldings were seperated at all times. While there my gelding broke a splint bone when he was kicked by another gelding out in the paddock. Later my mare broke her jaw, again a kick from a mare in her paddock. I believe the problems with injuries were caused by...
Some really good stories here!!
I am the queen of expensive abcesses though. On not one but four occasions now I have packed my horse of the vets and demanded xrays despite the vet saying abcess. On all three I was at least right about it not being an abcess, 2× broken bone, 1× laminitis and...
I took my horse to uni....
I left my horse at home and my mum looked after her for the first year. I got really good grades but did to much partying and alcohol and ended up quite depressed by the end of the year.
I then took her for the second year and I was really happy to have her and...
I love the way they fit but mine started leaking badly after just two years which was very disappointing. I'm a bucas convert now, they are really great rugs!
I have two, its always good to be able to check or have a spare for if one gets lost borrowed. I have done a lot of lending as there are loads of people where I board that don't have them. Seems silly when they are so cheap.
My mare had a 'moderate to severe' tear to the medial collateral ligament and some legions on the DDFT. She wasnt properly diagnosed for 6 months during which time she didnt improve at all despite box rest. The vet that did the MRI said he would give her an 80% chance of not healing if she had...
I used to walk my horse all the time, she injured herself and really benefited from the gentle exercise. I usually put her bridle on and carried a whip to keep her walking briskly and make sure she wasnt dragging her feet. As she got better we jogged too. I still take her for walks quite a bit...
My boyfriend was nervous around horses at first and now he has his own!!
Id start by watching horses interact with each other and talk them through some basics like what it means when they pin their ears back. Also, tell them to stroke the neck or shoulders, lots of people seem to pat the...
My mare did. It took more than 6 months to get a diagnosis for her, at the time there was only 1 MRI in the whole of Australia and I saw numerous vets that couldnt give me answers. In the end her feet/ lameness were critiqued by a farrier in America who said her feet were in bad shape...
This is true, it gets hot where I am. I have gone to check the horses in the middle of the day when its 42°C and found them out in the sun when they could be in the shade or shelter. It surprises me as one is black and her coat gets so hot, but it doesnt seem to bother her.
Taking the partition out will fix it, I have known people to travel two horses together without the divider without issue. Otherwise, putting the horse on the left instead of the right has fixed it for some horses I've known.
I wouldn't hesitate, we recently moved an old (27yo) TB over 800kms from my mums to where I am. He wasn't in good condition at the time but he travelled well and is thriving now.
Twice a day everyday, before I got my old horse I didn't really need to but I would always pop in for a pat on my way to work. But now I need to hard feed the oldie twice a day.
Just wanted to comment that soft ride boots are amazing!!! They have much thicker pads than easyboot rx or any other therapeutic boot I have seen. I got a gelding recently that had the worst feet I have ever seen, one of which was severly foundered and he wears soft rides 24/7.
I was really...
