Don't call about a horse which says "forward going and takes confidence from her rider" and ask if the horse is a confidence giver for a nervous novice. Durr!
I have a wet monster on mats, and I use fine woodchip (Hunter type), with a thick layer of newspaper underneath, where he wees. It is free and saves me a fortune in woodchip. I just take out the poo by hand, and the middle bit of the bed including the newspaper, and replace the paper and the...
I have mats, then a layer of newspaper (sheets, one copy of The times thickness should do it) where he wees and shavings bed on the top. I save up papers during the summer, and get them from anyone who will give me them. A perfect way of recycling. It saves me a fortune on shavings and gives a...
I'd not believe anything they tell you that you can't prove (got caught that way!). So go with what you can prove, passport, try out etc. Do with the horse everything you would want to do with it, so catch it, tack it up, pick out its feet, turn it out then catch it again etc. I always think...
I really feel for you. That kind of change can be really frightening, and conflicting advice as well. I agree with everything everyone has said about cutting down on the feed and turning him out as much as possible. Just to let you know, I have a 15h 25 year old welsh cob, similar in type to...
I'm on my third pair in 15 years of what they used to call "Safety riders" short boots with steel toecaps. Fantastic, and saved my feet no end of squashing. :)
Have you tried removing/changing his browband? My old horse had an exceptionally wide forehead, so needed a extra full browband on a full bridle. If yours doesn't like his face being touched, it may be that might help?
I also have a fatty who just gorges anything and everything you put in front of him. Tiffany, I am very interested in the Ad lib blocks you mention. Where do you buy them from?
I have one like this. "Hippo" is a good description ;) and he also lies in his wee. Euww! I have solved the problem finally with mats, a thick shavings bed, and under the shavings a layer of newspaper where he wees. Sounds mad but newspaper is a) free, b) very absorbent, and c) biodegrades fine...
Honestly? If you've not bonded with him and you're not enjoying your riding, sell him to someone who will bond with him and find yourself something you enjoy. We have this very expensive hobby for fun after all, and we can't all bond with everything.
I perservered with my beautiful showcob...
Might it be worth having another word with your current yard and explaining things? That you love it there and really don't want to leave but that your horse's arthritis means he needs more turnout than they currently offer, so is there a chance there could be more than he has. Do they have some...
I'd say it doesn't matter how little a horse cost I'd still have it vetted. After all, vet's fees are the same whatever it cost. I feel the same about insurance. It's down to what it might cost me in the future not what it cost to buy. I've had all mine vetted. It only mattered once when I tried...
