    Hammer marks

Yes, we call these Hammer Marks in Cornwall. A sign of good health and bloom - especially on a winter coat.

    Avoiding linseed for melanoma prone?

PurBee - thank you SO much for such an informative reply!! I hadn't appreciated the ratio between omega 3/6. So actually feeding a much smaller amount of linseed (which she was having but it gradually increased) possibly wouldn't provoke the same excessive response? (should also have said that a...

    Avoiding linseed for melanoma prone?

Hi - I have historically fed my horses on speedibeet, chaff and linseed, with a few rolled oats for energy when needed, adjusted according to whether it is for the portly cob or the IDx who tends to drop weight over winter and can go flat in harder work. Both have a vit/min balancer and salt...

    Show me your greys?

My 8yo IDx this autumn - she was charcoal grey everywhere at 3 when I got her, now her face is completely white and the rest of her is slowly following suit.

Clipping - am I being ridiculous?

My maxi cob (17yo) is chaser clipped, hogged and legs off. No rug, even today in the rain. Toasty warm and hopefully burning off some fat! In the depths of winter he has a deep and good quality 50g rug (no neck) just to keep the rain off. He's never cold. I'm sure yours will be absolutely fine x

    Ariat boot sizing?

I have decent size 8/8.5 feet and 'shapely' calves - 8/42 standard are plenty big enough, wide leg was too wide and if working without stirrups, a standard 8 will slide off my feet...! For comparison, I can't get my foot in a Dublin size 8, I would say they are true to size/on the generous side.

Horse with fussy mouth in contact

My mare was in the happy tongue with similar chomping and yawning - thought the dc swivel would be a good option to try.... It wasn't. She hated it and I couldn't take a contact at all. We're now having tentatively better results in a Trust medium ported D ring snaffle and a Collegiate anatomic...

    Losing skin pigment in greys

Mine's the opposite - the coat is dark generally but where there is any disturbance of the coat/skin (not necessarily a wound, or something that's bled) it seems that the new skin cells just don't carry the melanin so come back pink with white hair. She's got a really fine coat for an ID type...

    Losing skin pigment in greys

Oh I love his spectacles!!! I guess its less noticeable on mine as she greys out, but it's frustrating as she has a patch beind my leg where she got a rub during coat change last year. She's still quite dark there so it looks awful! People have asked if she's part appaloosa due to the freckling...

    Losing skin pigment in greys

I'd be interested to see how many people have had a grey that loses a lot of black skin pigment (not just hair pigment) during greying out process? Is this vitiligo? Horse had a largely black skinned face when I bought her at 3.5, with a blaze and pink nose. She had small pink irregular patches...

    Past threads/members- Good/Bad/Funny

What a brilliant thread!!! I was/am a 'lurker' for many many years, and this is reawakening many memories! But I have to say Ted is my favourite, and the 'penis beaker' was probably the one that made me laugh out loud. I also enjoy the horsey (and unhorsey) ghost stories that always reappear...

How do you refer to your horse?

My cob is called Mr P by lots of my friends, generally 'gorgeous boy' or 'handsome man' by me. ID is often 'stinky', 'Princess Pissy Knickers' or 'that bloody mare' - normally as she disappears through a hedge or over a gate at inconvenient moments....

Will farriers be able to keep working?

Yes, but mine has said that he will not do any that need to be held and don't tie up, which rules out one of mine. Totally respect that and understand he has to stay safe, but not sure what to do... That said, I'm sure going a couple of weeks over in the current situation won't kill them. Much...
