It sounds like you've had some nasty experiences- I am very sorry about that. I suggest going to a local riding school at first, until you are confident riding and being round horses again. If you were to get a horse, then find it hard to cope, you would have to go every single day, which is an...

I've unfortunately had very little luck with helping out at riding schools. My parents are quite into horses (never owned one themselves though) and they ride- do you think this might work in my favour, because they could help supervise, and one would always be there even if I wasn't riding.
