Needle shy - tips on reducing reaction please

Quite a few of my local vets have done a clicker training course with Gemma Pearson. It's made such a big difference with many of my clients' horses. I definitely agree with stangs- clicker might really help your horse (and your vet). Let us know how you get on 😊

    Ticks- Help!

I lost my cob to lymes disease last year, so now am extra paranoid about ticks. I use hedgewitch icaridin spray and find it absolutely brilliant for repelling ticks. The sprayer is almost silent and it doesn't really smell, so i find that all the horses are happy to be sprayed with it. It seems...

    Farrier etiquette

Speaking as an EP, I would say that the clients I will go to the ends of the earth for have the horses clean, dry and ready in time, and put the effort into training their horse to be calm and still for trimming. I don't even care if there's a bit of work to do still on getting the horse happy...

    Mud/grass mats

Mud control mats are the best thing I ever bought for my horses. If I could, I would do the whole field in them! I haven't tried jelka yet because they are heavier due to their size. I can put MCM down on my own. I have moved yards twice since buying my first batch, and they are fine to dig up...

    Livery prices Exeter

I think it depends where in Exeter you are. Rollestone is about 10 minutes from the city centre and has great hacking! Not sure what their prices are, but I've always been DIY and prices have varied from £65 per horse to £135 per month. I believe full livery varies from around £400 to £600...

Best thing to keep ticks away

I've found phaser and hedgewitch icaridin spray to be quite effective.

    embarrassing moments

I forgot to take my foot out of the stirrup when dismounting and ended up with a concussion! The horse didn't move a muscle! I also got on my horse from a gate out on a hack but didn't realise the gate wasn't latched properly. As I sprang up the gate opened and I sailed right over the top of a...

Another horse injured on the roads

I've been privileged to have had 2 wonderful shire horses over the years. I don't know whether it's a shire thing, but neither of them would take any crap from drivers. If someone was approaching slow and wide, they'd both stay nice and tight to the verge, but if someone was approaching at a bit...

    Barefoot needs more Heels

You may find that sorts itself out now the hock discomfort is under control, as the horse should start loading the hind feet more 'normally'. In the meantime, scoot do a 3 degree wedge pad that you could put in some boots if the xrays are showing flat/negative pedal bones 🙂

    Rider Pilates - Free January!

I've just done day 4. The extra exercise blew my mind! I did give up on the videos preceeding the 5 day challenge. I ride side saddle, so wear patterns are going to be wonky for me anyway! I'm toying with the idea of the courses, but to be honest, I am amazed that I have managed to do 4 of the...
