Breed/type to see you into your old age!

My heart desires an unhinged arab x section d but my head says stick to pure arabs. If my horse retires in the next few years but lives until he's into his 30s, I could have ten years plus of no riding at all then be starting again in my early sixties. 😬 Maybe I'll have come to my senses by then...

Redwings Horse Sanctuary, please sign petition.

They should be near enough banned altogether, not made slightly quieter.

Are you a one horse rider or a multiple mount person?

I figured out my type was Flame. I looked for something as close as possible (perhaps slightly less high energy, she was forward) to her likeness and found a horse that I didn't think I could get better than. Then he was pts due to ****ing colic, so I did it again and came up with a horse I like...

The nagging feeling that riding horses is just odd

I'm just working my way through this thread but just want to respond to this. I got my first pony at age 11. I learned riding at a traditional BHS riding centre and we kept the pony there. I'm from a non-horsey, non-rural family. I kept that pony 18 months and then decided I was tired of riding...

How long would you say the average horse is owned for?

I spend a year investing in the partnership. After a year I usually know if I like it and it's a stayer or I start investing in moving it on and getting another within a year.

    Endurance style stirrups

I got some easycares off ebay after a lot of googling and they are great. I don't like cages but they did make caged ones. They aren't produced at all anymore, I don't think, but second hand pairs do pop up.

    Can’t tie up outside trailer

Flame taught me not to tie up outside. She'd get upset about random stuff, pull back, snap her string and I'd have to try and get her before she gave herself another panic attack about standing on her lead rope. Too much drama. I hold my horse outside to do everything and put him back in the...

Is It Worth Working in the Equine Industry Anymore?

I think the same BS is actually everywhere, it's taken over. I just left a job neck deep in BS, read new employment contract, yuck, pages of BS. Have you seen the Veronica's toxic workplace stuff on YouTube. It's so accurate that it's like tragic. With horse jobs you have to weigh up the pros...

    3.5t or 7.5t

I don't know about the big horse issue, my horse is only just a horse, but I much prefer the van. I used to love driving the Dafs but everything takes so much longer. Opening, loading, getting there and getting the kit and horse off is miles swifter with the van. It doesn't need the plating and...

Ride the horse - not the x-ray

Yeah, I arrived at this conclusion years ago. Stop enthusiastically investigating chronic stuff, deploy rest and conditioning, and encourage the horse to remain as active and strong as possible whist never pushing it into distress territory. I'm all for a few steroid injections for the most...

    Ghost saddle

This looks to be the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen (almost). Where are you meant to sit? No one has a backside that small unless you're meant to sit on part of that steep pommel 😬

Alternatives to harsher bits to slow a horse down?

Long, steep hills and ploughed fields.

If you can get hold of some second hand easycares, they're well worth it.

What do you count as bolting?

This is one of my biggest peeves. A bolting horse is a horse that's f'd off. It's literally what the word means, like how rearing means a horse standing on it's hind legs. What you experienced was the worst and most dangerous type of bolt resulting in the worst possible outcome, that does not...

Saddlers - do they ever agree?

I don't think expecting a rigid shape like a saddle and a moving, soft, ever changing thing like a horses back to align with one another is really possible. You want a saddle that works. I like my Reactor Panel which is flexible against the horse and on disks but if this isn't working out my...
