    Waterproof trousers for riding

Thanks guys. I’ve gone for a Covalliero riding skirt - it’s over my budget but she’s been a great friend. I’ve bought myself one too ha ha!!

    Waterproof trousers for riding

Thank you for the links. They are both lovely. Have you any experience with the quality of either make? And with the chaps, presumably your bum doesn’t get wet if it’s raining?

    Waterproof trousers for riding

I am wanting to buy a good friend a pair of waterproof trousers that she can ride in, to go over her jodhs. It is a birthday present and, while I would gladly spend a lot of money on the present as she is a good friend, I don’t want to embarrass her or make her think she has to do the same for...

    Beware old riding hats

Here’s an image for you, from a website called ‘Wasp Nest Bingo…’. Enjoy your dreams tonight.

Can we cope with ban on spurs/whips etc.?

I’m definitely in the ‘light touch behind the leg rather than a kick‘ camp but I’m not a fan of spurs. Having recently invested money that I would have been spending on livery on lessons at a very good riding school, however, I feel that I only now really use a schooling whip correctly. My leg...

    Buying dilema

For me, as long as the fugly did not extend to conformation problems, I am happy to look past aesthetics and go for character, temperament and the physical ability to do the job. Like nagblagger, I’ve really fallen for some extremely odd looking horses who have just loved their job and been a...

    Hopping before a jump ?

Presumably you’ve made sure it is not a pain response? Sometimes if they find it hard to round over jumps due to hock issues they try instead to fling themselves over at speed.

    Hopping before a jump ?

If she was mine, I’d stop with the jumping completely for a bit and concentrate on flatwork and building strength in her frame. If she’s calm, supple and strong she will be more comfortable to lengthen or shorten her stride, slow down or speed up as required. Echo Fern007 on the pole work...

Having a horse put down - Injection or Gun ?

So sorry you are having to face this. Ive witnessed three horses PTS with injection. All three were calm and went peacefully. The vets were excellent, sedated beforehand and stayed to ensure the whole process was completed, doing a number of reflex tests at intervals. I wouldn’t hesitate to...

Bringing an 'older' horse back into work...

I brought a 20 year old back into work. He took me Elementary. To start with, we hacked. I did nothing but gentle hacking for weeks, building him back to fitness, before introducing short periods of trot work. Then gradually started a bit of work in the school, walk then trot. If you are...

    Colicking horse

Not sure what your weather has been like but the frost, rain, sun combo around March and April does create a lot of new growth in the grass which causes some horses to colic. Also, I know of at least one horse who coliced due to an abscess - she had no history of colic. Fingers crossed you get...

    Dealing with fiesty horses?

Riding school feisty I would imagine would be things like cutting across the school to the back of the ride and things like that. With new horses, I always adopt a very neutral seat and contact and see how they react. Agree with the other posters, just go with the flow and see how you get on.

    Knowall novices

It’s a thing! I was listening to a very interesting interview on Radio 4 a few years ago, with an NHS Dietician, talking about ‘nutritionists’ who get their ’qualifications’ from a 2 day online course and then think that they are qualified to give people dietary advice. She said that, because...
