Waterproof trousers for riding

I am wanting to buy a good friend a pair of waterproof trousers that she can ride in, to go over her jodhs. It is a birthday present and, while I would gladly spend a lot of money on the present as she is a good friend, I don’t want to embarrass her or make her think she has to do the same for my birthday.

Can anyone recommend a really good pair, that will go the distance, for a reasonable price? I’m thinking in the £30 - £50 range. Everything I have seen seems to be north of £70.

Thank you for the links. They are both lovely. Have you any experience with the quality of either make? And with the chaps, presumably your bum doesn’t get wet if it’s raining?

For someone riding one horse out hacking or schooling the Breeze Up's will be grand but be warned - they are made for skinny shapeless men and don't fit women very well.

And it's only kids size that are £60. The adults sizes are £75.

I have a few pairs, my favourite being Mountain Horse Team trousers because they are so thin and have a grippy seat, however I think they were over budget and are weird size wise.
Look at Just Chaps maybe?
My second favourite and they fit far better are My Ornella’s however I did get bucked off in them and blame the slight slipperiness ?

Can't speak for the racing ones, Elf will be able to though. Rambo chaps - everyone I used to work with wore them teaching/hacking and with a decent coat, bum stayed dry Usual good Rambo/Horseware quality too.

I’ve recommended them loads recently but a riding skirt from DoPo Coats is amazing.

They’d keep the saddle dry as well as the rider compared to trousers.

I bought one last year and absolutely love it.

I used to LOVE my Ornella's! When they were properly made and they also made thick padded winter ones! I'm not a fan these days. They survive a day's racing in the rain but I wouldn't wear them to ride in any more. They aren't waterproof after about 2 months.

I am yet to find a pair of waterproofs that last more than a season under £150. Jomiluti ones are good but very pricey. Same for the Carberry ones but I am not a fan of their jackets so wouldn't buy the trousers. Apparently the Equine Products ones are good and about £80-ish. Not personally tried them but I might go there next.

The Noble Equestrian ones I got from Ayrshire Saddlery are utterly shyte. Didn't last a week in normal rain before I may as well have not been wearing any waterproofs.

I also wear decathlon kipwarm waterproof jodhpurs all winter they keep me warm and dry.

Just Chaps - I love mine. I wear by themselves or over jods. They have shape and come in diffrent lengths. Wash well and dry fast. But over budget. It depends on your friends size and shape which others will fit.

Probably not what you want to buy as they are so cheap and unsexy but I spend winter in Dickies rubberised overtrousers.

Decathlon have a set of lightweight chaps, leaves your bum free, they are brilliant, they only come in khaki though. They are excellent though ?

I usually find all overtrousers/full chaps way too long in the leg and i end up walking on them!
I've also had full chaps that didn't do up tight enough around the waist.

I really like the look of the Rambo chaps but have been looking at hi viz rain legs as an alternative.

I have a waterproof skirt - in many ways it is better than trousers tbh. Less hassle to get on over anything, covers the saddle etc and good for walking and yard jobs. Equestrian waterproof trousers always seem incredibly expensive but the fit can be awkward, or they ride up or are permanently filthy ime!!

I have JustChaps ones as they come in a short leg, they are brilliant and keep me dry even if I’m out in rain all day!

The decathlon ones I got are great they one just to the top of the ankle im short too ?

This is the ones I got, they are very roomy and the waist is elastic , just clips together at the front. They are ideal for riding and for short legs ?

Just Chaps come in short/regular/long. I had the same problem

I had some Toggi ones that were short in the leg. They may be worth a look

Am I the only one here who just picks up something in the summer sales from one of the outdoor shops (Millets/Blacks/Mountain Warehouse)? I tend to aim for the £40 mark before sale price for trousers and more for jackets (although trousers only last a season whereas the current jacket is 3 years old).
