    Adoption fees

Around me (East Midlands), £250 is about average for adoption fees. Some do 'two dogs for the price of one' for bonded pairs though!

    What to do re rabbit?

If you could have her as a house rabbit with a quiet base, she may become more friendly. Whereabouts are you? If you're East Midlands, I may know of a rescue that could help.

    Rat control

Electronic traps are good if you don't have many but in your case I would see if you can get terriers in. Rats need water to survive, so it's hard to stop them from accessing it in stables.

    Buying Etiquette

I prefer to message/email/text for basic information about the horse before viewing but will also ask about temperament and vices over written communication. My thinking is if it all goes horribly wrong, I would like to have written evidence that the horse was supposed to be good to load, not a...

My experience shopping online for horse stuff, best/worst

Me too, I am lucky to live within an hour's drive of two really good, large tack shops and there are several smaller ones nearby that are good too. Often, their prices are comparable to online and at least I can see things 'in real life'.

    Arthritis supplements

Feedmark's Best Flex if you can afford it (it's very expensive but they often do offers) or one of their other joint supplements, I have had good results with various horses with all of them at one time or another (I am not paid by Feedmark). Equimins Flexijoint is good, as is the Equine...

    How good is your hacking?

Brilliant! We have a very quiet lane from the yard which if you ride up if for about 100m, you can then access miles of bridleways with a choice of field or forest rides. Hacking on the road is also excellent because it is all very quiet lanes with 30mph limits around the village. I have been on...

    Best way to prevent thieves?

Varying the times you visit is a good idea and having a very bright torch (quite useful if it is heavy too). You can buy motion sensor solar powered light quite cheaply from Amazon, they are useful because you can put them up pretty much anywhere and they are quite sensitive.

Sad Post - How To Say Goodbye

I am sorry that you are in this position OP. I have always had the hunt (despite not hunting myself) because they are always very calm and quick. The last horse I had PTS, I knew it was his time and I didn't feel too emotional about it in the lead up or on the day itself, it was more afterwards...

    V-Bandz

I agree with others, they are usually really good. They even rang me once while they were at HOYS to sort out an order I had placed. I would drop them another email on Monday.

    Burghley shopping thoughts

I agree that the days of bargains seem to be over. I remember going to Royal Windsor with my mum just after buying my mare and kitting her out from the trade stands with rugs, numnahs, grooming kit, lotions and potions very reasonably (we had to make several trips back to the car). I haven't...

Following on from popularbreeds, what unusual breeds do you see in your area?

Round here the legislation only allows French Bulldogs and Cockerpoos. However, I saw a Standard Dachshund yesterday and I was amazed at how big it was! I had never seen one in real life before so it was unusual to me.

    Theraplate and CPL?

They're meant to improve blood flow, so I guess they may help the lymphatic system. I haven't put a horse on one yet but I have been on a Theraplate for my own injuries and it seems to help.

High end/premium liveries - suggestions please!

Me too, I didn't know places like that existed and I am on a very nice livery yard with excellent facilities. I am sure my mare would be completely unimpressed though!

    Little wins

My little win today has been that I found a spare bottle of fly repellent that I don't remember buying!
