Which cooler rugs are generally quick at wicking sweat away? Are Thermatex still the best or do other such as Coolex or Premtex do the job just as well?

Need something that will quickly wick sweat away (or moisture post sponge down after exercise), we are at livery and ideally don’t want to have to wait hours for the moisture to dry before putting her stable rug/turnout back on after exercise. We are getting YO to change rugs a few hours later if evening… but not always possible as often we have to turn out shortly after so have been resorting to a lightweight turnout and hoping she doesn’t cook!

I’m a thermatex fan but also keen to know if others do the job as quickly?

In my experience as an Endurance rider, the shorter the coat, the quicker the horse dries. Hence why we repeatedly full clip all year. I have various coolers and wicking rugs and find they all have their uses. A sweaty, wet, long coated horse does take several hours to dry unfortunately.

Thank you she has a blanket clip but it’s almost grown back! I’ll get her re-clipped next week and have a full clip i think but she is a warm horse!

Competing Endurance on a horse approaching 700KG who runs HOT (heaviest rug I own is a 40G and he lives out 24/7*365) is challenging - often use 150 litres of water for cooling before re-vetting at ride end!

I have an old Colin Cook Thermalux. I don't know how fast it works, but it does work and unlike most Thermatexes, it has cross surcingles and is normal rug depth. I just leave that on overnight.

As a budget Thermatex option I had a shires version and was really pleased with it.
Currently have the Mark Todd Coolex and it’s not as good, it’s fine and does the job but isn’t as quick as a proper Thermatex or the shires one

I really like my Rhinegold fake Thermatex cooler. I have an original Thermatex but use the Rhonegold version far more. I pop it under turn out rugs and turn out as normal and take it off the other end of the day.

I agree with the clipping comment though. When in work, mine is clipped out for this reason as he runs hot being a native & I find it much more practical. But he does still get sweaty so the Rhinegold is fab.

Ditto this - easiest thing is to fully clip as then they dry really quickly - alternatively there was a thread the other day where this liner was recomennded as it's been designed to dry them off under a stable/ turnout and be left on:

Just in case you don't often use liners, my experience is that most liners can be put with any top rug as it can just be clipped on to the d rings at the back.

Ooh thank you! Do you know what it’s called?

I suspect it's this one. I bought a version of this from decathlon around 7years ago and it's been fabulous. I use it after being caught in rain or after washing off and find it easier and lighter to use than my thermatex.

It's also easier to pop in my washing machine afterwards than the thermatex.

Going against the grain but I have an older version of that Decathlon rug (5 yearsish) and aren't overly impressed with it. I'm not sure it dries any quicker than a fleece or nothing on.

Have the previous version of Airmax cooler on one of ours really quick. Ours used to live out so needed to dry quick before putting on a turnout.
Picked it up 2nd hand for £10!
