My boy's was JUST under his hock. It was a communited fracture - fractured into about 5 or 6 pieces but not displaced initially. He had a Robert Jones bandage and strict box rest, Danilon and karidox antibiotic as a slight laceration and concern of bone infection. Once the lower part of the...
My horse broke his off hind, lateral splint bone due to a kick in the field in March. My vet initially hoped it would knit but unfortunately six weeks later it moved slightly and he had to go for lag screw fixation surgery - his was a proximal break.
Is it the distal end of splint that your...
My experience has always been the same as milliepops - I've worn lead gown and held my horse. I personally think it's very presumptive to expect the horse owner to be able to help with slides / oxray etc - eg my friends case, so she was unable to.
Or that there will be an extra pair of hands...
Is it common practice for a vet to arrive with X-ray machine and no vet tech? My friend was unable to have her horse xrayed last week as the vet arrived, expecting her to hold the slides while he xrayed and she's newly pregnant so was unable to! Apparently they always X-ray that way.
My...
My boy sustained a communited fracture to his offside hind lateral splint just below the hock in March. Following X-rays it was decided best to heal naturally with Robert Jones bandage and strict box rest. Unfortunately at the six week point after everything had been going well I found him back...
I maybe wouldn't be so concerned if it was a distal break as they can manage without the lower portion of the splint bone. It's the fact that it's the portion directly below hock and that we've now had to screw bone as it wasn't healing well that concerns me re prognosis.
Thank you that's very encouraging. I realise every case is different but good to hear a positive outcome. Obviously my vet has to be guarded in his prognosis and mentioned the possibility of degenerative joint disease as the damage is in such close proximity to the hock.
I've also been told...
Has anyone else experienced this?
My horse sustained a kick in the field and suffered a communited break to the upper third of his offside hind splint bone. Following X Ray's, six week box rest, leg strapped up, Danilon etc he was doing reasonably well until he was found on three legs again...
