Hind Splint Bone - Proximal break

Has anyone else experienced this?
My horse sustained a kick in the field and suffered a communited break to the upper third of his offside hind splint bone. Following X Ray's, six week box rest, leg strapped up, Danilon etc he was doing reasonably well until he was found on three legs again one morning.
The decision was made to put a screw into unstable part of broken splint and attach it to the canon bone.
Any positive outcomes re upper hind splint bone fractures?
 
I had a top 7yr old 14hh that was kicked & also suffered deep cut into the tendon - part severing it, also having a shattered splint bone, all on the off hind. (you could put your hand into the wound & lose fingers to the palm, thats how deep it was - from an unshod 12hh pony.
Operated to remove all the (9!) bits of bone leaving about an inch at the top which was slightly pared away to remove possiblities of floating & the tendon flushed out, also box rested 6 weeks then slowly built up from 2 mins walking daily, till after 12 weeks the pony was on 1 & half hours walking.
Accident happened in late October, pony out competing well on the circuit the next May with selected workers in the June, and hunting the following winter.
Went on to stay sound with her next owners till she had to be PTS last yr at 31, due to colic.
We didn't have to screw, but i was lucky to work with one of the best 'leg' vets in the country at that time.

Thank you that's very encouraging. I realise every case is different but good to hear a positive outcome. Obviously my vet has to be guarded in his prognosis and mentioned the possibility of degenerative joint disease as the damage is in such close proximity to the hock.
I've also been told the screw may need to be removed at some point. Hopefully my boy will do as well as your pony has done!

My mare kicked shattered splint bone 19 pieces, time off to recover and a few set backs, but apart from a slightly filled leg on that side ( it was just below the hock.) She went on to lead a normal life not screws nothing they took all the bone out. And in memory of that awful day the vet gave me the bone fragments

To add this was her off hind on the outside, she did go sore once or twice and she was put onto anti biotics due to it being very close to the hock joint

Good grief HGA!! That must have been a terrible time for you. Definitely making me feel there's light at the end of the tunnel though
 
I had one who broke the splint in the one hind leg into seven pieces .
All the loose fragments were removed under GA leaving only the top section .
The horse had six weeks complete box rest and six with walking being led from another horse ( safer with that horse than leading ) went back to work no probs .
 
Thanks for the responses. It's good to hear positivity - just hoping my boy does as well and he gets back to something like he was. Time will tell

Echo this with my horse. Damage was from a kick. Although we didn't need as much box rest and we were back to work quite quickly. She was never lame just had a bump out the side where the bone was displaced.
 
I maybe wouldn't be so concerned if it was a distal break as they can manage without the lower portion of the splint bone. It's the fact that it's the portion directly below hock and that we've now had to screw bone as it wasn't healing well that concerns me re prognosis.
