    Throughbred living out?

There are at least 6 TBs at our yard and all the horses live out. This is a management choice not because they have to. They all have a stable if needed. We are lucky that we have good grazing and lots of it but with modern rugs they easily cope and are healthy and happy living out as a herd...

    when is he too old??

My mare is 24 and although we have slowed down a little she loves sponsored rides and jumps like a stag still. I don't jump her as much as I used to but you would still think she was a youngster (I have been asked if she is a baby in the last few years due to her prancing excited behaviour). I...

Winter Turnout: is that happening to everyone?

Mine is out 22/7 - just comes in for food and hay in the morning. All horses at our yard except two stay out. Mind you our usual field is out of action due to waiting for the waterboard so have more mud than usual and am putting hay out which we don't usually have to do.

Poo picking - is this reasonable?

At my yard we all pooh pick into large trug buckets. 2 buckets fill a wheelbarrow. The most we have to do for any horse at the most 'productive' time of the year is 6 or 7 buckets i.e. 3 barrowfuls. At times when there is less grass it goes down to 3 buckets a week and the fields are kept clear.

    Best wellies, Hunters, Aigle etc??

I have Frostline which I love - my feet have never been so warm. Only six months so far but going well. Friend at yard bought some too and she loves them too. I had Aigles before which were good but only cost £20 in the sale. I should have bought more pairs. I couldn't find any with a wide...

Grazing horses with sheep and on the same land as cattle?

I had a friend who moved her horse to a field with just him and some sheep but she had to leave when he started killing the sheep.

If you could have one horse under the tree..

He has always been my dream horse but my current mare (TB x Shire) is very similar so I would still have her but 20 years younger!

Used the same saddle for years, no probs

The saddle I have I bought 20 years ago for a 14.2 pony. It has since been on a 16.1 TB and my shire x TB 17h mare I own now. It has been refitted for each of them and gets checked/ reflected periodically. Recently I have had their backs checked (it was unheard of when I was younger). It is very...

    When husbands help..

My dad once got the wrong horse in and fed it. He should have caught a chestnut 16.2hh but brought in a bay about 15h. It wouldn't have been so bad but the chestnut was his horse!

shire x tb - temperment etc

She does doesn't she! I hope yours turns out as nice as mine is. How is yours bred? Mine is by Alamein who was by Brigadier Gerard. She is out of a shire mare called Dulcie who was bought from a gypsy in Gloucestershire.

shire x tb - temperment etc

I have one - she is amazing. I have had her for 14 years. She is now 24 but you wouldn't know it. People ask if she is a baby when we go to sponsored rides etc. She looks like a warhorse. She jumps like a stag and loves life. Definitely not a plod. Very sharp and intelligent to ride. She used to...

Tell me about your NICE mares!

I am a mare person. First pony was a saint of a mare. Second pony chestnut mare was amazing - did everything from dressage, jumping to gymkhana, RDA and handy pony. She was 14.3 and won the riding club cup for the horse with the most points in a year at the age of 23. I had a gelding in the...

    How to "safely" fall off?

I don't do judo but my children do and one of the first things that are taught is how to safely. I fell off my bike one day and automatically did all the things my kids do when break falling at judo. I didn't hurt myself at all. Haven't tried it falling off my big girl though and am not planning...
