    You could try the new Sherwood Forest rugs, they're very reasonably priced and are not too big in the neck, I have a pony with a very short but stocky neck and they've been the best so far, I usually have to fold them under/over.

    When you've cleaned out the hole you could spray it with iodine, that should help keep out any further infection in between cleaning bouts.
