Wowzers, this thread has kept me entertained through an entire shift at work :D The over friendly/familiar and then later pure psychotic yard member is a dead ringer for someone I've been dealing with recently. Luckily I think I'll spot the warning signs next time I encounter someone like that...
Yeah Kateo he came with quite a bundle of different issues. In the hands of a more skilled rider and on a different yard he'd probably thrive, but with me he can be a challenge.
Mini update: owner has let me down and changed plans so we won't be meeting up today, but we're rescheduling...
Oh my god that poor thing  I guess for your own security it'd be best not to post pictures, but I hope whoever is responsible is caught. Dreadful :(
Thanks guys. Around christmas I was thinking how nice it'd be if I could just buy him :) I earn enough to pay yard bills and extras, saving up the cash to buy him will probably take some time but could be worthwhile. Even if he never made a fantastic hacking out horse he's very willing when...
Hello again all :) This is an update on Zack, we've come to a cross-roads and I've no idea what to do! For those who don't know the brief story is that after a long absence from riding, by total chance I ended up taking over a horse whose owner was absent. He has issues when riding but...
Ahhh, no I get what you mean :) I was definitely just a passenger today, so putting two and two together like you describe it seems he thought he was in charge and frightened himself. I'll have to watch out for that in future
Ever get that feeling your horse is planning to spook or just trying it on?
Had an odd moment with Z today. He was eager to be out the moment my foot was in the stirrup. I decided to just let him choose where we were to go since he seemed to be on some sort of mission, and we...
Bunches of balloons, puddles, funny looking hats, friends on bicycles, getting people to clap and cheer loudly :) Michael Peace has a book called "The 100% Horse: How to Create the Go-Anywhere, Do-Anything Horse" which I really recommend, he has some amazing advice in there! He also has one...
Obviously just some nutter having a bad day and you took the brunt of it TChamp! It's a wonder we don't start seeing more cases of horse rage considering what riders have to put up with if they venture out on the roads. Just watching all the idiotic driving the mounted police have to put up...
Zack is a massive spooker but he's getting over it :) If it's something especially scary he'll swing around and take off. He used to do this at least two times per ride, but touch wood he hasn't spooked at anything for the last four rides so we're getting there. When he does do off with me I...
We have to :) there's a risk at these scary low temps with the horse's saliva it'd stick to their tongue or mouth unless it's well heated first - like licking an ice sculpture. We keep a little plugin radiator in the tack room to hang them on so they're toasty warm before we quickly run out and...
Is the bridle too tight/too loose on his head? :) if the bit is pulled up too high it can cause a horse to either tilt their head or repeatedly stretch their neck forward with their mouth wide open. If it's too loose he'll keep trying to open his mouth or 'chomp' noisily at the bit instead of...
I agree with Tigertail, when Zack went shoeless he was chronic on frozen or stony ground until after we cured his thrush :) when the ground started to freeze last month he got so footy he would stand still without moving and his legs would fill up. After the thrush was sorted he came on in...
