Hard to say without knowing the dog - I heard of some working Collies rescued from a similar situation (shut out in a barn) and apparently the fosters brought them home and they were friendly, pretty well trained dogs once in a home environment. But a nervous dog could be a whole lot harder to...
I know of someone who does the tongue 'cluck' too. I tend to use "good", or "yes", but a trainer who's workshop I attended used "bingo" which I think is a good one you don't tend to say that often (unless your dog's called Bingo, of course!)
Did he used to growl? Was he ever punished for it?
I would never actually tell a dog off for growling, it's a great verbal warning and brilliant manners from a dog. A growl is a polite warning to keep clear, or a precursor to a snap, or a signal that they are uncomfortable and being pushed to...
I'm a cynic. Someone on another forum had one done..I managed to find all the same info as this reader did by Googling minimal information (I think just the dog's name, breed and owner's first name - not even sure if it was all that) and then finding links to posts, Photobucket accounts, etc...
My first port of call would be the vet for a thorough checkup - full manipulation of the joints to check for pain, a comprehensive bloodtest (including detailed thyroid panel) and possibly further scans to rule out issues like spinal problems or even something like a brain tumour.
If the Patterdale is looking uncomfortable, even around the children, has he had a thorough checkup at the vet? Blood tests, full body manipulation, even possibly x-rays or further scans if there are any hints of pain (joins, spine, neck, etc.). When having the bloodtests done, ask for a...
The way I see it, many people eat poor diets and appear to be healthy, of normal weight, good skin, etc. for years - but that kind of diet takes its toll and can lead to issues like diabetes, high cholestrol, clogged fatty arteries, bad dental health, etc. after many years.
So I don't...
Was it Advocate you were given? The benefit of that one is that as well as covering most worms, it also covers lungworm which many of the other products on the market won't do (the only other treatment is Panacur, at half-dose for 10-14 days, not the one-off worming dose - Milbemax will reduce...
May be worth having his hyper/anxious behaviour investigated medically, especially if it only became an issue at a certain age or something. One of my dogs has always had a little bit of a worried personality but after moving house it just all seemed amplified and she developed separation...
Found this fab article/website in the past, well worth a read

If you want to try a magnetic collar, there's a brand called Armadillo which are a lot cheaper than Bioflow and have had quite a few good reviews too. They recommend you alternative between...
If the Dogs Trust say no then try some other, smaller rescues as they can often be more willing to judge the situation on an individual basis. I work fulltime and managed to adopt from a rescue, as do many others :)
The only thing I would change is to not reprimand her for toileting inside. Imagine how small her bladder is and how short her gut is - if she toilets inside despite being offered toilet breaks, it's probably because she has to go right now rather than out of choice, and I think it's unfair to...

Casper used to get sick every time we went to a particular walking spot, which was about 7 miles away actually, so I stopped taking him there and just did the shorter journeys to places nearby for a while. It didn't take too long, probably a few weeks, so not months and months.
