Puppy wormers

Could anyone advise me on the best puppy wormer to use. Pup is now 10 weeks and 2 weeks ago we administered a vet issued combined wormer/deflea-er (can't recall name, but it was administered on the back of the neck) and were also given Drontal for tapeworm to do this week.
Should I stick with this or are any of the alternatives that I can get elsewhere useful?? Vets are very expensive, but will gladly pay if that is the genuinelt better treatment!
 
Drontal is the best and very effective. I worked in a rescue centre and drontal and frontline was all we used. Although it is expensive it is the best. The combined flea wormer was probably either advocate or stronghold. Also very good and I use this on my semi feral cat who would freak if I tried to get a worming tablet down her throat! Hope this helps :)
 
Was it Advocate you were given? The benefit of that one is that as well as covering most worms, it also covers lungworm which many of the other products on the market won't do (the only other treatment is Panacur, at half-dose for 10-14 days, not the one-off worming dose - Milbemax will reduce an infestation but not completely treat it) so worth finding out if lungworm is a risk in your area. Curious puppies with a fondness for exploring the world with their mouth may be more likely to swallow a slug or snail and pick up the parasite. It is hard to detect and symptoms only show when the lungs have already started to become damaged, so it's something you should keep on top of if its in your area.
However, even prescription-only treatments can often be sourced cheaper by getting a prescription issued by your vet (they are legally not allowed to refuse, unless its on health grounds but in that case they cannot issue it either - they are allowed to charge a 'reasonable' charge, not specified, but if you feel it is extortionate you could report it to the governing body, the RCVS) and ordering from a reputable online pharmacy. Animed Direct has been the cheapest I've found for Advocate for quite a few months running.
Definately avoid buying POM from any websites that offer to sell it without prescription - usually they operate outside of the UK to get around prescription laws, and not only may you fall slightly foul of the law for importing POM medication, but you run the risk of out-of-date or counterfeit products (at best, ineffective, at worst, downright harmful) or falling victim to a scam where they take your money and nothing ever arrives - and then their UK-based numbers and emails never work to get a refund.
Drontal isn't prescription-only though so can be picked up online easily. Animed Direct sell it quite cheaply but also check out Cestem, which is the same active ingredient but half the price.
