I've had my Percheron for c. 5 years, he's now rising 12. Bought him as a happy hack for my husband. After a break from riding due to work commitments I am just bringing back into work with a view to doing fun rides and a bit of dressage with him.

I would say he was 120ft max alongside the houses, but our land is on a hill so as he flew between by my oak tree and that of my neighbour's he was extremely low - I actually thought he was coming in to land!!! Importantly, he was not above my oak tree as he flew...

If you were being a purist, for maximum safety and stability you would not tow more than 85% of your vehicle's kerb weight. With many trailers at c. 1,000kg that means you would only have 615kg spare to tow one horse or two small ponies.
You are right to be cautious with a pick-up however...
