Every feel like your spinning too many plates and you might just drop one!

I'm a single mum, living on my own, trying to do a degree, dogs and one horse who I would love to get out about with this year. I'm trying to save up for a trailer and every time I get close, something goes wrong and I have to spend the money elsewhere! Most of time I tell myself to get a grip and carry on, I can do it but sometimes I just feel like its all to much, like today!!

Are us horsey people completely insane, do we try and take too much on! Who else feels like they are running around like a headless chicken!!

Totally. I have three horses in two different yards, 2 dogs to walk, a full time job which is full on all day, try to get to yoga twice a week also to help my muscles.

Thankfully I have a week off work next week to just do nothing!!

I've got next week booked off too I am really looking forward to it! :)

Me! 3 horse in 2 yards. House. Family. Cattery business. 2 dogs who luckily don't need me to walkthem. Just about to take on new puppy and 4th horse in a 3rd yard. Oh and a mother in law who needs a daily visit. Talk about spreading myself thin. But I don't want to turn 4th horse down as excellent safe hunter. I always do this and then fall in a crumpled heap after a few months.

They say if you want something done ask a busy person :)

Without meaning to sound flippant, I see it as character building, there are days when I feel like superwoman and those are the days to be proud of

Keep up the momentum but dont forget to sneak some time for yourself, spring will be here soon x

Out of curiosity, not remotely having a go at anybody, for the people who have horses on different yards - WHY?!

There is no way on Gods green earth i'd have horses on different yards and hell would freeze over before i bought a 3rd (already have two) knowing I'd have to keep it on a different yard!

Yup - I think horse people think about what they can do rather than what they can't.

I have 4 horses/ponies, a dog, a 3 year old and an 8 month old and am back working part time. It amazes me if I ever go to any baby get togethers and listen to non horse Mums whinging about how little time they have (tends to be Mums with just 1). Clearly free time is wasted om them. Mid you this winter I am pretty knackered!

I downsized to 1 horse as I was struggling with a VERY fulltime job. Even now it can sometimes be a struggle to squeeze everything in. And I think I'm single as I just don't have time for a man on top of a job, a horse, an endurance season to train for, a part-time MA and occasional teaching/tutoring. But every time I see that lil chestnut face I am reminded it's all worth it ;-)

Of course - its what we do. I've got a very demanding career (own business with 4 branches), work 60 plus hours a week, plus work at home at weekends, an OH, a home, a daughter (my darling18 year old daughter Mini TX, who I cant do without regarding the horses), two horses on DIY livery, Mini TX does BE and BD and PC, so plenty of running around for competitions and training.

I am knackered but love it.

yes! I have a 40h/wk job with a 90min commute (thats daily total), 3 equines in over night (at home-so have 12 acres to maintain as well) due to state of paddocks (one is retired, on is 4 so due to be started), a large dog, 2 part-time tutoring jobs where I have to find a 'spare' 40 hours in a 2 week period for marking every 6 weeks plus give tutorials. I also freelance as a massage therapist and am trying to train in another modality so am trying to fit in case studies.I have a husband with a longer commute and working week than I who has special needs kids from a previous marriage. I then I signed up for the equine nutrition course and started running lol. Oh, and I also breed chickens-have 3 pens and just bought a 2yo colt...

christ, when I write all down I need my head read!

Jazzy B, me too. I only work full time, am doing a half time uni course and have one horse. Although i help my sister with hers and my mare is in foal.
I've just had surgery which sees me on crutches and laid up for next 2 months - I'm rather looking forward to the time so I can get on with my study

Currently have quite an easy life, as sister is at home more than she used to be, so I don't do anywhere near as much of the 'donkey' work as I used to. In the past we had four horses, five dogs and three sheep here. I was working full time (still am) as was sister, had the then OH living here and a foster daughter, who didn't sleep a night through for three full years, so neither did I  She had a lot of emotional problems and needed a lot of help with them. I do have quite a stressful job, am a member of our RC committee and on a bridleways group, the best way to get things done is deffinately to get a busy woman to do them :D

I feel a bit like that atm with 2 children,a pony, dogs,a job as a home carer with lots of driving and mad hours and other family commitments
Soooo tired atm and I've got a busy wkend of work to get through yet :(
Roll on monday.me+kids have got the week off :D cue lie ins and lazy days.......
Well apart from amusing the kids, exercizing the pony+housework!!!

me!!!!
this half term booked so much to do with mine, hacking, show jumping, cross country clinics the lot! all payed for in advanced, then my pony decides to tear his legs up with scraped and puncture wounds! so im now paying a very large vet bill! along with all the poltices, vet wrap and the rest of it! no more riding for a while! boxrest= a very moody pony!!!

Its a bit un fair the comment about one child.I only have my son and does demand a lot of my time due to haveing no brother or sister(personal circumstances).A lot of my friends have said its easier with 2 children as they keep each other occupied!I have 2 horses and a 11 month old youngster that are mucked out and sorted through out the day,2 dogs to walk,a 40 hour a week wake night job,a fair sized house to maintain and decorate and a hard working man who I like to look after lol.Doesnt sound a lot but as I dont drive at moment its a fair amount in one day,i would love for there to be more hours in the day,but certainly wouldnt want it any other way apart from my job which will be sorted. :)

We used to have them altogether but had to give up the yard we rented - so 2 are on livery and 1 is at my friends house living out. We're moving again next month to get them all closer together again! But I agree it is madness!

No one else here has mentioned the elderly, ailing parents that I have to factor in in top of horses, working part time, husband self employed so sometimes helping him, teenager whom still needs ferrying about etc.
And,agree having just one child is not always easier as someone else says.
I am also currently laid up after major operation, but still have to do much of the above, as have no one else to do it. Currently do have help with horses as I am not allowed to lift or get pulled about, but can't afford it daily,so have to take daughter to them twice daily where possible, instead of resting.
Do think horsey women generally just get on with things,be it horsey or otherwise,as most are just used to being pro active, and not sitting about watching tv!

lol it does make me laugh when we have girls at work that are late because they had sooo much to do, they are single and have no children and no animals!! :D

Yep. I work ft, 2 kids, 2 dogs , horse and ponio. Other half works stupid hours so its like being a single parent. Constantly on the go, never much time to relax and its going to be even busier when the show season kicks in.

Its always the people that have nothing to do that moan that they have no time ;) whereas horsey people get on with it and don't complain. My life isn't too hectic at the moment, yet it really does make me laugh when other people I know at uni complain that there aren't enough hours in the day (when they have 4 hours of lectures a week and a dissertation but don't work nor have any hobbies or commitments at all, and still cannot make the time to do their washing up or clean the bathroom  ). All I have is a degree, part time job, equestrian club to run/team captain and a share horse 2 days per week (although it is now a 100 mile round trip to go and see her!). I'm making the most of the leisurely uni lifestyle before I drive myself to madness as the rest of you have :D

I think unless you have no job and no kids, only then do you have proper time for horses! I've got 4 horses (one I compete), a 9 month old son who is currently learning to walk (so needs constant attention!), a new house which needs bits of work done to it (we ripped the kitchen back to the stone walls and the new one is almost finished, so been living amongst dust with no kitchen for about 2 months!) and we're just about to start having stables built. I've told my own work Im not returning after maternity (which ended last week) and instead am starting up working in my OH's mums wedding photography business so Im going to weddings most weekends (we have almost 100 weddings this year...!!!) and we've just got a studio so I'm trying to get going with portraits too! Its just crazy... and my OH moans that the house is messy all the time... AGH. But then if I say its coz its too busy, he then says I should get rid of the horses so I stay quiet!!

I'm exhausted, this week more than most.

I'm at uni in my final year, work 30 hours a week, only have one horse but look after another 2, share with a friend sp some days have 6 to sort, to add to all the extra curricular stuff to put on cv to try and get a job when I graduate, applying for grad schemes as a back up plan to what I'd like to do. And a pestering cat who is on a fat cat diet, and OH who likes to feed her more than he should! So trying to keep check of him too, plus the housework. I also do pilates weekly.

Oh and this week we moved house, so scrubbing the old place we rented and then trying to move into the new place and get it sorted is a nightmare.

I wonder how people with kids fit it all in sometimes, but then I get bored when I have too quiet a week.

definately feeling like that at the moment and can't see it ending anytime soon.
i have 4 horses on 2 different yards, 3 dogs, 3 autistic children, no family and my husband has just left me for another woman, got to move house asap but finding somewhere is a nightmare.
i've tried to find loan homes for the horses/ponies but no takers so basically i have to do all i can to tick over until i see the light at the end of the tunnel one day.

Blimey, you've just put things in perspective! Good luck.

Hell yea we do! Its in the blood. lol I've got 3 horses and 3 acres of mud. One big cob supposedly in work (such a joke in this wearther), one rising 3 yr old and a shettie. I'm sick to death of dredging through mud at every step, sweeping, bagging hay, shovelling crap, looking like a scarecrow and going to work with hay everywhere! I Work part time, look after the house and, although my daughter is 15, she is to take to the school bus and back every day. I also work some nights. Hubby helps when he can but he's always at work. Got doggy too!

On top of that I have several immune conditions which means I'm constantly in pain and exhausted. I've got an under active thyroid, fybromialgia, pernicious anaemia, mixed connective tissue disease and most recently autoimmune hepatitis.......makes you wonder why I do it and for how long I'm going to be able to. Roll on spring!

Hi JazzyB

I won't go into detail as plenty of other have done that job for us....but as you've gathered you're a member of big group of us that are clearly mad!

On the long winter nights, it's particularly hard but I always tell myself that when I'm old and infirm I'll always be able to look back on my live with a smile knowing I made the very most of it.

Only downside - the result of being so damn busy means the years are flying by quicker than I'd like!!!

Good luck riding_high getting yourself sorted! Big hugs!

I work full time, have house work and other not fun stuff to do too. Thankfully have flexi time and I can work at weekends and at home in the late evening to catch up this is my second biggest saving grace.

My first and most appreciated saving grace are the other horse people in my life, I have 3 horse spread over 2 yards, (which I call the yard and the farm) as it is it can be quite exhausting but so much harder would be it without these people.

I generally do one yard in the morning and the other in the evening, sometimes I do both yards in a morn/eve if it's needed, we all work and have busy lives to accommodate but by acting as a team we get it all done. This year is harder than it usually is because generally at the farm the horses live out most of the time but they've been confined to the yard since Dec because of the wet. Thankfully the yard horses are out during the day, it was really difficult when they had to stay in during the recent heavy snow.

It can be a complex set of arrangements to manage. I am tired, and I feel like I'm letting everyone down sometimes, not just in horsey life but at work and at home too, I will be glad when everyone is out for the spring/summer, even though that will mean a lot of poo picking and ragwort pulling. All things considered, it's been brilliant for my weight loss and fitness and the horses do make me happy so it's all good

riding_high, I just wanted to respond to your post and tell you there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, my husband left me for another women four years, yes my life is more hectic now and I know I was moaning about it but I still wouldn't go back to the life I had before, be kind to yourself!
