running a diy yard is harder than running the country

your thread title made me laugh :D unfortunately its completely true. Anyone who enters into running a yard thinking its going to be easy money is in for a big shock. Horsey folk as a general rule are not the easiest bunch to deal with, don't get me wrong some are lovely, some appear to be...

    Auto filling water troughs??

Thanks PennyJ Mains connecting them really isnt a job thats going to happen anytime soon so I need to find an alternative. We have hose locks already but that only works if liverys use them properly and ocassionally someone forgets to turn one off and creates a puddle  A friend...

    Auto filling water troughs??

Thats not really an option due to location so I was hoping someone knew of another solution?

    Auto filling water troughs??

Need a bit of advice please. Currently we have a hose running from the main yard down across our burn which is then split to go to each field trough. It does the job but is far from a perfect solution as it is all connected so if one of the liverys leaves the hose turned on at one of the...

    Electric fencing.......safe?.......sometimes not?

There is good and bad with any fencing. I have rope on my own yard currently, previously used the tape but it can get very windy at ours and we found that the tape would snap in the wind which isnt much use. I would not use wire again after my own horse injured himself a few years ago as...

    Permanent Fencing recommendations

We use wooden post and electric rope. It is very windy at ours and the electric tape even with the insulators that clamp it in place were absolutely useless and a waste of money. The rope has been great though.

oh how I would love a horsey bf

I couldnt deal with a horsey bf. My other half is great he will happily come out and give me a hand if I ask, give them a pat and a carrot, bring in from the field, drive the lorry etc but its my thing and thats how I like it. He puts up with living in the middle of no where and having a...

    BYRDS worth joining?

Go for it! I was 22 when I joined. The camps are great, you get access to some excellent instructors and riding as part of a team is always good fun. Im on the wrong side of 25 now but had a lot of fun for a few years :)

After some help re business rates

Thanks for your reply. Slightly frighting that keeping your business rates is now better for you and that larger yards are paying less! I have managed to get the prices per m2 from the council but to find out any more they want to send someone out. Trying to avoid that at the moment and...

Can highly recommend Ready mash extra. Its fairly expensive but seems to work wonders in a short period of time.

After some help re business rates

obviously if I was to continue using the stables for my own personal use it would not attract business rates but what I'm trying to work out is if some of them were used for commercial use would I end up paying business rates on them all including the ones Im using personally and how do the work...
