Need a bit of advice please.

Currently we have a hose running from the main yard down across our burn which is then split to go to each field trough.

It does the job but is far from a perfect solution as it is all connected so if one of the liverys leaves the hose turned on at one of the troughs and it is already full it is likely to over flow while someone fills another.

Does anyone know if its possible to use the troughs with the ball cocks in them to stop them over flowing with a hose connected to them and not blue pipe? Does anyone have any other suggestions utilising our current hose?

Would like to get something decent sorted before the better weather comes round again!

I would have thought you'd need to be on a mains supply for each individual trough to have the ball cock auto fillers.

My own personal experience is that it doesn't really work trying to auto fill from a hosepipe attached to the ball cock. There seemed to be a lot of leaking from both ends...

Perhaps you could plan a staged programme to get piped water up to the troughs, even if it takes a few years to get there? The actual blue pipe and taps are not that expensive (about £2/metre for the pipe), just the contractor and the digging will be the main cost.

Can you not get some kind of "water stop" thing to put on each branch of the hose to act as an on/off switch and stop overflowing troughs? like this http://www.hozelock.com/watering/ho...inkler/19mm-3-4-aqua-stop-hose-connector.html

Thanks PennyJ

Mains connecting them really isnt a job thats going to happen anytime soon so I need to find an alternative. We have hose locks already but that only works if liverys use them properly and ocassionally someone forgets to turn one off and creates a puddle

A friend of mine that lives in the US has pointed me in the direction of an auto float valve which is only £10 so im going to give that a go and see how it goes.

Can you feed water from one trough to another rather than multiple feeds off one line?

That way the only one that could overflow would be the last one in the run (which could be the closest depending on land levels) - and the one that would need to be kept an eye on when they were all being filled...
