Thank you all for your excellent responses - this is really clear and I think paying £1 plus mileage is really fair. In the past I have always added in decent breaks, made amazing picnics and given a bottle plus a venue voucher, so I feel a bit better. A couple of judges had said they thought...
Hi
Can anyone help regarding running some unaffiliated dressage please.
1) How many tests would a judge be expected to judge
2) I know they often get wine and 'mileage' but do they get paid?
3) Do writers get the same?
Any other tips re how to look after judges would be most...
Does anyone know where I can get statistics about hay/haylage prices over the last 15/20 years? I am doing a 'project' and would like to find out more information.
I thought Defra might be the answer but can't see anything obvious...
thanks in advance

I only have two liveries at our place.
If their horse poops on our drive and isn't cleaned up.....I will clean it up. After all, it's me that doesn't want to see it on the drive, so I will clean it up as it makes me happier. Takes two secs, so not really worth an argument over.

Wow TarrSteps, at last, an intelligently written response which has taken the posts the way they were intended.
Canada sounds fun, it is a big wide world out there, with lots of different approaches.
Just gets a bit hard when you strive for high standards but nobody else seems bothered!

Ah well if that is the way you go on to your liveries, then it's no wonder you have "troubles". Sorry but airing these troubles and criticising the people who pay your wages on the worldwide web is not a professional thing to do in my opinion.
I also do not agree with you that...
That explains it!! Sorry Tia, but 99% of the mess we are talking about relates to stable mess - DIY's not picking out feet, muck falling off wheelbarrows, trailers, dragged out of stable, hay trailed across hayshed.
It sounds like Tia has got it in for the other yard owners, when we should be...
My only qualm about their mess is that I can't afford to pay someone to clear up what would take them 5 mins each, with 30 horses, 30 x 5 mins = a big chunk of staff time. I'm not so fussy about every last crumb of mess, but I do think particularly the issue of picking out feet and checking...
That's cool! I used to think it would end in disaster teaching your OH but mine insists I am the only person who he will let teach him, but I think it is because he is too embarrassed to let anyone else see him on a horse. Ahhhhh
It is possible to be registered without the insurance but usually you would only take that option if you had insurance via a yard policy or other policy.
Some people are qualified but no longer registered.
I kind of see the sliding scale as:
QUALIFIED, ON THE REGISTER AND INSURED...
I think how you word that letter will affect the result - write it out in draft, read it, run it by someone you trust (not a customer... they will warn the others!) and don't issue it until you know you are happy you have worded it the best way possible.
I often put an info section on my bills...
