    Time to pts?

It sounds like PTS is the right decision. Personally, once I've made a decision to PTS I prefer to arrange it as soon as possible. As an old friend once said to me 'they don't know there is no tomorrow'. I moved my 25 year old retired horse to a new yard six weeks ago to better cater for his...

    High paying flexible jobs

Another vote for IT. Good for flexibility and working from home and is pretty well paid with good benefits. There are a wide range a roles and you don't have to be technical. I started off in IT many years ago as a trainer and now I'm a Product Manager. My office is London based but I have...

    Hay prices

My horse is a retired, good do-er and we still have plenty of grass at the moment. I'm mixing straw with hay to eke out the hay I've got.

    Hay prices

I’ve just moved yards. Old yard £6 small bale. At new yard I have to source my own hay and paid £7 a bale delivered. It is nice hay but the bales feel light.

How long would you say the average horse is owned for?

I've only owned two horses. I bought both from their breeders. My first horse (the dun in my avatar) was with me until she was PTS. The second is still with me, he's 24 and pretty much retired but he will stay with me until the end. I don't have an issue with anyone selling a horse that isn't...

    Diastemas

My 24 year old horse recently had a couple of gaps in his teeth made wider to prevent feed getting stuck. Time will tell if the treatment prevents any issues but no issues so far.

Still riding at 100 years old

What an inspiration! This lady got back into riding in her 70s and was competing in her 80s. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyne18rgkgo

    Airbnb for horses...

I’ve lots of great memories of Mill Farm at Wells in Norfolk but it’s camping or find a B&B in Wells which is within walking distance. A little further up the coast but very popular is https://hfsnorfolk.com/

    Riding and cold feet

Thin silk socks under normal socks works for me. I've got some angora socks from Corrymoor and they are warm and hard wearing. I also put sheepskin inner soles in my boots if I've got room. https://www.corrymoor.com/product/eventer/

Stable doors stolen along with horse box

People living on-site and cameras won't put them off. We had a couple of trailers, a caravan and a quad bike stolen from the yard and it's all on CCTV. All the thieves had their faces covered. Towed them across fields as the yard has electric gates right outside the farmhouse. The CCTV was...

Horse carrots 🥕 - just for horses?

I eat them. In appearance they are exactly the same as supermarket carrots but a fraction of the price. Sometimes I find they are very large or very small but they all taste the same.

Thanks. I'll take a look at those.

    Help finding the right toy

I look after a nutter of a cockapoo a couple of days a week and I'm looking for a suitable toy for him. He's a lovely boy and loves his toys but he does destroy them. He's destroyed some of the soft toys that belong to another dog I look after by ragging them around and pulling out the...

    Experienced vs novice horse owner

I'm on a DIY livery yard with 35 horses. In my experience novice owners are high maintenance in that they either asks lots of questions (not a bad thing) or they don't ask questions and do stupid and dangerous things and you need to keep an eye on them for the health and safety of them, their...
