Retired Rio at 10 years old so coming up to a year ago now. He was moving oddly behind, not anything major, even the vets had trouble seeing it as he wasn't even a 10th lame at the time. He had some physio done under sedation and got worse so he was refered in for bone scans and x-rays. They...
Received a black eye when stretching Rio's legs forward. I had been teaching him to lift his legs when I touch them but he sometimes fixates on one leg and will pick it up all the time when I am touching the other. Anyway, I touched one to pick up and he was fine, bent down to do the other and...
Thank you everyone for your suggestions!
He has a very deep bed and has rubber matting throughout his stable, from what I can see, he only lays on his left side and doesnt roll in his stable. He is on a diet at the moment so his hay is soaked for 12 hours (2013 hay), his paddock is bare and he...
Well I was using derma gel but it looked like it was getting worse as it was more red and angry after a week, not getting better so I stopped using it. For now it is just doing its own thing. It seems to be keeping it self quite moist with all the weeping it is doing although it is drying...
Hello All, it's been a while!
I apologise for the odd title, I wasn't really sure how to describe it. Anyway, Rio has, on both of his hocks, grazes in the hollow of them, they are quite sore and are weeping. He has been scabby there for the entire time I have owned him (3 years now), they...
I have a 15.2hh, 11 year old, black PRE, I have had him for 3 years. He has recently been retired to do non-taxing in hand work only due to an old fracture in his neck, ligament issues in his sacroilac and arthritis in his hocks and fetlocks, before that we did dressage :)
Depends on the horse. If it needs them, then they will wear them (although I wouldn't have tendon boots on unless I was jumping or doing fast work).
To be honest, I am far too lazy to be putting boots on if they aren't absolutely necessary. One of mine needs boots on hind and over reach boots...
Kickers, both to myself and other horses, ridden or otherwise. Laminitics. Any artritic changes, melanomas, ulcers, crib biting and door kicking. Not hacking out alone, not hacking out in company, horses that spin around (especially if they drop their shoulder), horses that don't stand still...
I think it is personal preference, I like long reins so that I have a loop down their shoulder and when I ride long and low, I still have enough rein to sit properly without holding the buckle. I use full reins on my 15hh and x-full on my 17.2hh.
I have a stallion (also Spanish), he is kept on a livery yard with 5 mares and 5 geldings. He is stabled next to a mare. The horses near him in the field tend to change about, at the moment he has a gelding directly next to him and a mare a field up. During the summer most of the horses are...
3 large bales a month with a 17.2hh and a 15.2hh beast. They have 2 large sections each a night and have a bit left over in the morning. Currently the 15.2hh is also in so he is eating a section during the day too.
I pay £40 a bale.
