There is bruising on the top as well as the bottom, so assume it's from the bit being too thick rather than contact, as he doesn't require a strong contact. Ideally I'd like a sprenger duo/nathe type in a 12 or 14mm, but they don't seem to exist :( A thinner metal bit would be sharper...

Does your mare react quickly or does it take many hours for the reaction to show? My horse is a bit of a nightmare for things like this, but has never reacted to a spray before. Have you tried a lavender wash or similar for yours? Might be gentle enough. The bedding was from the same place as...
