Drastically need to slow down hay consumption (big round bales)

I have fed large round bales for a few years, not out of choice as the farmer decided to produce them. I had 4 mouths to feed at the time, two horses and two small ponies. Initially I had no idea what to expect as I had no experience of them. They are encased in a net of sorts but this was...

Mystery mouth problem - possible TMJ???

From my experince with my horse (not ridden with a bit) showing the occasional head flick etc , after various tests which left me with no clear diagnosis, I eventually arranged for an equine chiropractor to examine her (with the vet's knowledge). The result was my mare presented with many...

Mud Fever - recommendations on what to do!

I just don't want you to end up battling with a chronic skin issue, which I have been doing with my mare - which is a long shaggy dog story, maybe I will post photos sometime. But if you feel ridges and you think the fetlock is swollen even if very slightly trouble may be brewing in the lymph...

Mud Fever - recommendations on what to do!

I suggest you call the vet to check it all out, the swelling could be the start of cellulitis or something similar and you really want to nip any infection in the bud. You don't want to end up with an infection in the lymph nodes.

To canter or not to canter? That is the question??

Lovely to hear your horse hasn't mellowed with age, mine is 27 and thinks he is 5 :-) The issue is the horse will feel well and full of himself and could re-injure the ligament. Best to follow your vet's recovery plan and it may be that as your horse is used to walk to canter then trying to...

Help - Horse keeps trying to bite!

Water pistol/jiffy squeezy certainly works when the horse is tied up. But your horse nips when leading so you really need to get your leading technique sorted out and also do the basic groundwork with him to make sure he knows how to keep out of your space. There are various youtube videos...

    Aged Horse - Haylage question

The primary cause of choke in horses is a lump of poorly chewed food. Horses that “bolt” their feed, meaning they eat too fast, are at risk of choke as they try to gulp down as much feed as quickly as possible. Older horses with poor dentition and the inability to properly chew their...
