Just wanted to say - Jake (the horse that WON'T jump a particular wild ditch and is capabable of letting the whole hunt go past without following) - made up for things a bit today - won the novice BSJA at Port Royal (Yorkshire) and there were 15 in the jump off - so it wasn't a doddle!
Just found this - back at page 5 or so - but yes it IS weird what they will and won't jump isn't it - are we just not understanding something or are they just all very different from each other?
It is wide, but more muddy than boggy! The odd thing bout Jake is that he seems to completely ignore leads! The other horse jumps back and forth right next to him! And Jake will do any manufactured ditch - it's the wild stuff he doesn't go for. Now thinking we need to practice slithering about...
Good way to go - thanks. P'raps he's got warmblood in him - not Irish enough! Friend says horses hunting in Ireland get used to slithering through mud and undergrowth. We're going to get off the tracks and tramp through WILD country - then get back to the serious stuff!
Thanks for the hope! But he should trust his rider! am trying to find a ditch that is just a little boggy - but we are flooded out with this foul weathr.
Haven't tried again - yet - weather too foul. Jake jumped tidy ditches last w/end PURRFECTLY - so got to find untidy ones to try, then will go back to the NO-GO ditch. Couldn't upload pics here - so please see temporary upload pics of no-go ditch at Jake's profile page at...
Did she ever change her mind - i mean did you ever tempt her over them (and if so HOW?!) - or did you just stop asking her to do them?! Also, i did identify Jake - he is Parklands Blackjack, profile at www.spaceforhorses.com - and despite the ditch I am very proud of him!
Thanks - not intending to sell, and if i were would hope i could say that we did have an earlier problem with a ditch, but reliable now - by the way how do you find out about these cliques - Pooh-Ba etc?
My friends say I was mad to post about Jake not jumping a ditch in H&H forum - say it will devalue the horse! - but surely people can say when their horse has a problem???? And Jake is a very young horse!
Just need to make sure none of us get hurt doing this! The ditch we have been trying is in a wood - we could very easily all get wound around trees, Jake included - guess we need to find a ditch in the open that he doesn't like. Thanks for the advice.
