Haven't tried again - yet - weather too foul. Jake jumped tidy ditches last w/end PURRFECTLY - so got to find untidy ones to try, then will go back to the NO-GO ditch. Couldn't upload pics here - so please see temporary upload pics of no-go ditch at Jake's profile page at:

If doesn't work, search Parklands Blackjack at spaceforhorses.com
- he is STILL a great horse!!

Aww bless him , he probably thinks it looks too boggy!

You will get him over it I am sure of that

Thanks for the hope! But he should trust his rider! am trying to find a ditch that is just a little boggy - but we are flooded out with this foul weathr.

Mine used to be a big wimp - when I first started hacking her out she wouldn't go in puddles, over streams, up/down banks and she even used to try to refuse to walk on the grass verge!

I just kept at it and now she is completely fine.
She just needed time to build up trust in me. I just looked for as many natural obstacles as I can whilst I am hacking to build up her confidence, even if it means nipping down a dead end to cross a burn and back lol.

Blimey! That looks large and boggy? Were you expecting him to jump from landing to landing side - looks about 20ft? Is the destination side clear of trees? Or go someway down the first side and jump from there? (This is something Irish hunting horses get practised at but not a "conventional" approach). I think you need to find a properly constructed ditch with reinforced sides - like a xc course - and do that, or take him hunting where a lead will make him braver. Good luck.

Good way to go - thanks. P'raps he's got warmblood in him - not Irish enough! Friend says horses hunting in Ireland get used to slithering through mud and undergrowth. We're going to get off the tracks and tramp through WILD country - then get back to the serious stuff!

It is wide, but more muddy than boggy! The odd thing bout Jake is that he seems to completely ignore leads! The other horse jumps back and forth right next to him! And Jake will do any manufactured ditch - it's the wild stuff he doesn't go for. Now thinking we need to practice slithering about in mud! 'Cos if I were a horse, I'd slither down first then jump out - but as you say, that's Irish!

Wierdly - my mare would jump that quite easily, but a 'manufactured' ditch with sleeper sides is more scary to her.

Best of luck with making him more 'irish'!!

Very strange beasties indeed.

Just found this - back at page 5 or so - but yes it IS weird what they will and won't jump isn't it - are we just not understanding something or are they just all very different from each other?
