I'm not sure where abouts in Manc you are, but Rochdale RC run a good ODE twice a year (May and Sept) PN is 2'6, Novice is 2'9 and open 3'3.
Keep an eye on their website for 2008 dates:

Yes of course you can as long as it's open to non PC members. I think most of the ODE's i've ever been to have been run by PC's and they are well organised and most of them have been on BE courses.

I only do ODE's unaffiliated but i must agree that £125 is seriously over the top for one entry fee. I can do a month of weekend shows BSJA for that!!!!!!

It makes you wonder where the money goes as most of the helpers at these events are volunteers.

A few years back Bicton did a very break down on where the money was spent. Course building, judges, materials, insurance, medical cover etc etc. It was quite an eye opener and for them without the aditional sponsorship they got they wouldn't have broken even.

It is pants....I will prob still rejoin though, hopefuly diesel prices will drop again soon, although unaff events are looking more appealing....

OK this shows how sad I am! I still have the 2000 program from Bicton.

IN 1999 they took £46,000 in entry start and stabling

They spent
£8000 - Hire of site and stables
£9000 - Upgrade and improve xc
£10,000 - Prizes
£2,000 - Medical cover
£5,000 - BE levy to include insurance
£14,000 - Printing, judges, catering, loos, portacabin hire etc

Total £48,000 before adding in admin costs etc.

I am sure all those costs have increased particularly insurance and medical cover.

You should all take up SJ'ing ! For £125 you can enter the Small Tour at the Amateur Inter-Nations Show at Towerlands in the spring....and that includes stabling and entry to up to five classes. Approximately £500 in prize money you could win.....AND.....you don't have to ponce around doing any dressage

Yes but you are going to like the poncing around doing dressage and you will end up like us spending a fortune on registering for all 3 disciplines

Most events keep a wait list but some don't. In general if you withdraw before the ballot date you get a full refund (but with online entries most ppl enter the day before the ballot date anyway). There is a published withdrawel date, usually just under a week before the event, and if you withdraw before then you get a percentage back, 50% if you're lucky. After that, forget it... nothing, vets cert or not.

[/ QUOTE ]

I withdrew before the withdrawal date a few times this and got NOTHING back

Then you'd just moan about all the eventers coming and beating you

I'd moan about the eventers regardless :groan:

Besides, the eventers wouldn't win everything there....the glare from all the bling would put you off

Exactly what I have just done!! Registerred to all three and it has cost a fortune. Although my BD will be worth every penny I think am really enjoying that at the mo!! "poncing around the dressage arena!"

Bad thred for someone looking for a new challenge next year.

But say you run (and for comparison i've looked at intro price at Oasby), you get 5-6 mins dressage, say 2 mins SJ and (guessing here) 5-6? mins XC, for £66 inc start fee thats a whole £4 a min, compared to around 2 minutes in 2 phase (say 14 jumps) 1.05 m open class bsja with 100+ entries at around £11-12 entry, costs £6 a min. or just under a £1 a jump.

And you get to stay til midnight for the pleasure, and go like stink to have any chance of a place, below top few you'd get your entries back.
Yes some of the bigger shows have good prize money even in the novice classes, but you get 100's in and all the pros so its even harder to win your place.

Seems all disciplines are pricy, espec when you factor in diesel.

Maybe we should all just come out of the closet and admit we are DRESSAGE DIVAS.We could save a fortune.lol

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes but I like to TRY and event!

Well at Intro and PN they don't have to give anyone prize money if they don't fancy it! Bit like kicking you in the teeth AND laughing if you ask me! William was 2nd in a Novice this last season and won, wait for it, £5 more than the entry fee.... having paid a £10 start fee and driven there etc....

Its annoying that it goes on the venue - and the fact that Intro isnt a good enough level to receive prize money thats what it feels like!

I came 3rd in an Intro with Mac at Grt Witch and just got to rossie. Then came 3rd in the Intro with Spider at Borde Hill and won £31 not bad! So why does it depend on the venue

This year was going to be my 4 year olds first season but im going to have a re think. I just cant afford it. The only other option is if I register for part year but with my other horse doing BSJA I think im going to do that instead with him and wait a bit. How annoying, again for the working non professional it so expensive. Make my winter plans change a bit.

To make it worse fuel will probably go up!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRR

If he's 4 next year that solves one problem as he'll only be able to do 4yo classes on day tickets, or do you mean he's 5 next year?

HJ - I'm not sure how organisers decide whether to give it or not, but there are rules on how much they can charge as an entry fee depending on whether they award prize money.

with regards to doing pc events they are usually less organised and also round near me there isnt a single pc event round a BE course! so i think i have absolutely no choice!

I know that it is expensive but it's not as if all of the events are raking in huge profits ! Until this year we could have argued that BE were making a reasonable profit but the weather has really hit the finances of BE as well.
At one of the events that I have fence judged at they often don't charge me a start fee which helps and every couple of years they give me a free entry.
If you really want to save money you could always give up competing completely....and sell the horses.
It's all relative as well, I have spoken to someone who's other half races cars as a hobby & each race requires at least a couple of sets of tyres at a few £000 per set !

I think you are all insane!

Its bloody expensive - deal with it or take up another hobby.

And no one is out to rip you off, most of these events are heavily subsidised with volunteers. How many of you moaning minnies help out at events?

We have a cross country course, it's shut.
I don't want to pay or labour myself for over 2 weeks to get it ready, have the field trashed, then have more idiot jumped up mothers (PC) than you can shake a stick at and for what... usually less than £500. This doesn't pay for new jumps, the preservative, time, strimming, topping and generally making the farm public safe.

So stuff you lot, I'm flogging stuff on eBay as its an easier life.

I take 2 nags SJ and it costs £52 for 4 classes which lasts around 10 minutes.

I cannot believe you are all so naive or tight or both.....
