Decided to sell both cars and get a decent 4x4.
Have a HW gypsy cob and 2 MW horses and use an old rice trailor for towing any combination of the 3.
Looking for something between 2000 & 2002 as dont want anything too old but no later than 2002 as this is when the new tax brackets occurs. Got to have a bit of luxury as used to my focus ghia.
Any suggestions much appreicated

Mitsubuishi Shogun or L200/Warrior - love them both for towing anyday

My L200 has the back on it so it doesn't look like a pick up and is great - loads of room for shw stuff adn getting feed/hay into. My Shogun was an import and I could get parts easily and I don't remember them being too expensive

jeep grand cherokees are quite luxurious for the money you pay! toyota surfs are beastie machines and are usually 3 litres so are expensive to run if you have a long commute to work but tow really easily!! especially big heavy horses and there automatics so sit back and relax job!!

We have a W reg Isuzu Trooper Citation which we have had for a good few years and it has pulled 2 16hhs plus all their takc in the trailer very easily.
Around our area (Moray) I have noticed Isuze Troopers (Duty and Citations) are very popular, more so than shoguns, freelanders, range rovers etc

see id love a freelander but they dont ave a very good name for themselves when it comes to towing
Did think about a jeep grand cherokee but dont want anything too juice as selling our everyday car so will need it for commuting

We bought a Nissan Navara (got rid of 2 Land Rovers - yuk!) best thing we ever bought for dogs, horses and husbands:) tax wont go over £180 as its a commercial vehicle, insurance cheap too. Can get GOOD prices on the ages you're after, just check they aren't too scruffed up (same goes for any pick up) as they are usually ex-trade, ie owned by builders who aren't delicate with the paint work!

We have a Jeep cherokee 2.8crd (not the grand) and it isn't too bad fuel wise (30+mpg when not towing)
I think you could get a 2005 one for your budget if you search about.

The L200 is great as long as it has full/high back like the truckman top or similar. When I first towed with mine it just had a flatbed and was awful to tow due to the air flow over the flat bed pulling the trailor onto the car all the time! Hadn't thought of that when I bought it!!

I would either go for an Izuzu Trooper though prefer the older 3.1 engine to the newer 3.0 engine, a Nissan Terrano or a Toyota Landcruiser (though think these will be pretty thirsty).

Also like Landrover Discoverys, they usually come with lots of accessories but think you have to choose the right engine etc with these, have heard they can have problems but never owned one myself.

Another vote for Troopers here, best car I've ever had. I would not buy a Freelander for towing as the older ones have no low range. I have a Disco TD5 ATM, great for towing, but lots of little things go wrong with it and tis very thirsty.

I know someone selling a Freelander within your requirements and she uses it for towing 2 coloured traditonals no problem

A freelander is classed as a light 4x4 and is NOT legal to tow two horses and a trailer. I know as I checked this all out.

Discovery!! I have an R reg & it's fab. I would think you'd get one newer than mine with your budget. If you can find an ES they have leather interior, etc. Mine tows really well. I had a 16.1 TB & a 17hh Selle Francis in an Ifor 510 & it had no problems at all.

Happy car hunting.

You could get a nice Discovery TD5 for that - to give you an idea, my Disco is the 2003 7 seater GS model with the new headlights, and various other improvements, on a 52 plate, and I would be looking for around £5500 for that (if I can persuade hubby to let me have a Renault Master instead, that is!!).

The Disco has the full 3.5 tonne towing weight and constant 4 wheel drive, so IMO it's one of the safest 4x4s out there.
