I had an invoice just for vaccinating 4 horses yesterday, *huge gulp, hide bill from OH for a while* all I can say is that I would hate to get Tia's invoice for 20+ horses just for needles
Just sent mine back,we have had to change vets because ours stopped doing horses. New vet charged for every little thing and duplicated alot of the medication for both horses.Charge £58 for visit £68 to examine £11 for intravenous injection and £20 to bandage leg the bill for 2 visits was £800 .They overcharged by £250 by duplicating medication and were stroppy when I phoned to query the bill
im thinking of changing to be honest, service is sloppy, they lose your papers when claiming on insurance, they are quick to invoice it but not send it out then demand payment from 21 days from date of invoice and as you know sam i have had another 2 visits after that lot! and they didnt even diagnose him right in the first place!!!
my dog ate rat poison at the weekend i had to rush him to vets they made him sick which turned out unnessercery when they called the poison line they said he would have had to eaten pratically the whole box!
they charged me £27 for making him sick
and £30 for the phone call!
i know the receptionist she said if anythink happens like that again the number is on the back of the box ow that would have cost me like 20p and the stuff to make him sick is 51p for hard ware store GREAT A GOT SCANKED AND YES IM SHOUTING ow well surpose better safe than sorry x

i dont have the invoice infront of me, but it was for 3 visits, one set of bloods, then injecting daily for 2 days with antibiotics and another drug? can not remeber the name and 2 weeks worth of powder anti biotics to be given twice daily... and that was just for the first lot ! dont know if that sounds like the right price or not?

They charged you for a phone call? Thats outrageous!
Your bill for your horse is cheaper than the one for my dog!!
She had to have a c-section to deliver her last pup. Bare in mind she's only a Jack Russell - it cost £593!!! And most of that is poxy VAT! I know it's an op but that's a lot for a little dog, and more complex to have her spayed and that would be cheaper. Though obviously she's worth more to me.
Flintus, that sounds outragous for what you've had, the two days of injections, was that the same time as one of the three visits,or was there 5 visits in total, even so, how much is your call out? Even at £50 a call out x 5 = £250, the bloods and injections can't have come to £250 as well, and sachets of anit's are peanuts. I would look seriously hard at your bill when you get home!
the injections were part of the 3 call outs, the last 2 days of the 3 days, where he had 4 injections in total, anti biotics and a drug to get him eating again, examination, and 28 sachets of powder antibiotics over 4 weeks. and bloods on his 2nd visit. they i will say are renown for their prices and to be honest used to have a good reputation but i dont see it now, anybody know of any vets in the north warwickshire area that dont sound like drool spouse?! lol
If you believe a spay operation is more complicated than a caesarean for a small dog, it shows you have never seen either!
Caesareans, especially where there are live puppies to try and deal with need more help and are potentially more dangerous to your dog. Think life-saving surgey (was it out of hours emergency too?) and that is what you paid for.
echodomino i paid £265 for my choc lab to have 2 scans, an out of hours callout and a caesarean for 1 huge dead pup in November plus vet was also kind enough to wait till 1st of Feb to send the bill , £593 seems like a rip off to me or do i not know how lucky i am to have such a reasonable and understanding vet? (sorry to hyjack this post)
I have only had one big bill for my neddy. It came to over £2500.
This was due to unexplained loss of performance and unwillingness to move properly. It covered things like x rays, nerve blocks, stay at horse hospital, vets trot ups, vet rider. They were at a loss and were going to send him home so I insisted they had him for a couple more days to ride him and see the deterioration. It turned out to be a sacro-illiac problem. He's fine now but thank god for insurance!!!
Part of it will be location - Devon is cheaper than Northampton. Part of it will depend on the vets - different call out structures, more or less discretion for the vets on what to charge. Distance from practice will affect charges to a different extent, some will include basic exam in call out, some won't.
For example, some vets will charge less for a "justified" middle of the night call than for a "unjustified" one, i.e. animal suddenly taken ill in night compared with one that was off colour all evening (and owners admit that it didn't seem right), and vet is finally called at 2am!
Seems high to me really, but would echo that surgery/caesar in small dog would be much more complicated than in large dog - size of instruments, space etc, so would take more surgery time, which may be one of the methods of charging. Big dogs are more expensive for drugs though, as doses are so much more!
Obviously a big thing in any bill is VAT (17.5%) so grows more as bill gets bigger - evil tax man.
Also need to remember that vets have massive overheads - x-ray machine, cars, staff and long training but are a lot cheaper than lawyers!!!!
Well I suppose I've been very lucky! My last vet's bill was just after Xmas for flu/tetanus jabs for one horse and two cats and he came out to me. I think it was about £80. I live in North Wales and only get the vet out when 'wait and see' doesn't work. Their call out fee is a lot cheaper too.
