Evening guys,

Local feed merchants can deliver as much hay as I want for £5 carriage, but its £6.50 a bale. Is this excessive? I know last year I paid around £4 a bale, but with the bad summer weather i'm guessing prices have gone up?

I have the option of paying £37 for as much haylage as I want instead but even when soaked i've read this is no good for a lami prone good doer?

Options are

£37.50 for x5 bales of hay delivered (don't know how long this would last? first winter keeping him in overnight)

VS

£37 as much haylage as I want

I pay £5 for a small bale which I probably get 4 big haynets out of. So if they are the same size, 5 bales wont go very far. Have you shopped around? Mine is free delivery too if you buy over 10 bales. x

If thats for a week then you are being ripped off by both.

I pay about that for DIY livery with haylage and straw thrown in.

If its £37 a month for the haylage then its OK

Suppose it depends on where you live but the hay is very expensive. Try farmers they are usually about half the cost of the feed merchants.

I pay £27.50 for a big bale of haylage that lasts just over 3 weeks. I certainly wouldn't pay more than £4 for a bale of hay !
Mind you my hay man only makes haylage now as says it's not worth while doing hay.

I'm in Surrey and asked around about hay prices last weekend. They went from £5.75 - £6.95 per bale with £2.50 delivery charge per order or to collect unless I ordered 100 bales and then the cheapest I could get was £4.75 per bale. I guess it depends on area. I'm waiting for planning permission to build a haybarn so won't be in a position to buy 100 bales until Dec. if anyone knows of someone who can supply to Surrey for less then pls PM me but for now I guess I'm having to pay feed store prices. I can get large bale haylege at a good price but am worried that with only 2 horses and a pony that it will go off before they can finish a large bale. I'd love to say I would never pay over £5 but unlikely in this area!

LynH Ashurst Farm Feeds near Reigate Surrey have hay for £5 per bale - they have website and do deliver I think.
I use large bale haylage for two horses and one pony who are out 24/7 all winter. A bale lasts them about 10 to 14 days and has never gone off.

I had a tough time getting hold of good hay this year. I paid £5.00 per bale for really lovely hay that wasn't rained on.

OP - can't you get 50 bales or so delivered in one go and store them? Have you talked to your local farmers? I go in anywhere that has a hay for sale sign and I've always been welcomed and shown the hay available. Do check the hay and choose the best (no really heavy bales or musty smell for example).

Carefeegirl, Can I ask how you store your haylage to keep that long as I have bought some huge bales this year and want them to last as long as poss. thanks

I was paying £40 a bale for large bales last winter I think I will shop around this year! I was quoted £6.50 a small bale by a local feed merchant last week, not delivered have to collect it myself.

i pay 3.50 a bale delivered from a friend... feed merchants around here are charging up to £9 a bale.. they arent even heavy and the quality isnt good... mainly around here you are looking at 4.75-6.75 a bale though... still stupidly expensive.

KL - it's wrapped and I just remove all the wrapping when I open the bale. Last winter my hay man was doing big bales of hay which were the equivalent of six 'normal' bales. The haylage is pretty much the same size. Takes two people to move the buggers :) I just have them on pallets in my storage area and get five at a time.

Being heavy is not a good thing with hay, although being light and poor is no good either.

sorry i didn't make my self very clear... i mean they are very loosely packed. As in it would take very little effort to pull of the twine and carrying 4 is easy enough except their size and the fact that all the hay falls out of the twine :o

Locally in NW Surrey which is not known for being 'cheap', Rokers were selling bales yesterday at £4.50 each, collection only.
I was picking up bags of feed and tho I have my winter hay in the barn, I pottered across to take a look & the bales were good sized & quality was okay too :)

Last week when I asked at Rokers they said it was £5.75 a bale for collection! How on earth can it vary so much in a week? I'm really pleased I didn't buy any last week if it's only £4.50 now.

Deffo big sign on the RH side once you have gone through the main entrance door :) (tho perhaps it might have been if you brought xyz amount like 10 or more tho  ) but AM sure thats what it said as I know I remember thinking that Frosburys is dearer

Thanks The Furry Fuzzy, I'll pop into Rokers 2moro to check the price and take the trailer up in the week when the car park isn't so manic. It was them who got me worrying about hay as they had signs up saying there was a hay shortage.
