I've just enquired with a local person (freelancer) as to how much they would charge for mucking out, turning out, bringing in, feeding, and 20 minutes exercise for two weeks whilst i'm on holiday, they quoted £45.00 per day(this will take less than two hrs a day), that's £630.00 over the two weeks. I could put him on competition livery for half that. What prices have you been quoted for this kind of thing?

When I last went on holiday in 2001 :(, I got a freelancer in to do my mare in the mornings. Feed, lead her out to the field (rug if necessary - it was!), pick up 3 piles of poo from the bed and sweep the front to a line (aubiose so no mucking out), change the water and fill a haynet. It cost £20 per day including travel as admittedly she did have to come a bit of a distance (I couldn't get anyone more local at all). Talk about money for old rope though.

FMM, where are you? i just might. I did'nt really want to move him off our yard as i wanted to keep his usual routine and hacks, but i don't know now.

Pfffft ridiculous!! If someone wanted me to do that, I'd do it for like £30 a week (but then I'm not anything special riding wise or anything, I just like everything horsey :D)

I used to charge £10 for excercising, £5 for m/o, £2 for B/I and T/O and rugs, £5 a barrow for poo picking and 50p to feed.

I worked out I would need 14 x M/O, T/O , B/I and rug, 7x poo pick, 12x exercise and 14x feed (as morning feeds are given by yard),

So my charges for this would only have been £260 and i'm a BHSSM, i think i'll just hire myself and stay at home.

Blimey that does sound expensive!
I own a very small yard just outside Reading and doing everything you ask with riding included would be alot cheaper than that!
Maybe it would be cheaper to put your horse on something like what we do which is holiday livery as the yard would have the provisions on site as such whereas the freelancer is probably incorporating having to go to your yard twice a day for turn out and bring in etc.
Can your yard not help you out or another owner that's there?

Good luck and if you get stuck give me a shout.

Holiday livery at my yard is £10 / day - includes muck out (x 2 in my boy's case), turn out and bring in, grooming, putting on horse walker, feed / hay / water / rug etc. If you want them ridden (hacking or schooling) it is an additional £10 / session. So MAX is £20 / day.

£630?? I nearly spat my tea all over my keyboard!

I know how you feel!!!!

last summer i looked after 4 horses for 10 days and was paid about £120 it was 5mins from home, matted stables and minimal feeds, 2 of the horses lived out so i think it was reasonable :) 630 is takin the piss big style!!! i would love to know if any one hires her!! £45 per day is wat i am on for a 9hour day!!!

we have a couple of women locally who charge £13 a visit to do everything bar ride - time unlimited - so £26/day for two of them

they're fantastic and very reliable

so for two weeks they'd be £364....

someone taking the peeeeeeeeeee........... folks i know who are high quaility trainers - comp schooling etc.. and charge between 25-30 per day and that's at gold plated yards

If you were in the Midlands I'd do it for free just for the experience of riding/handling a different horse. I sometimes worry I'm stagnating just handling my own babies, want to keep my skills up...

Where are you in Berkshire (pm me if you don't want to say) I do horse/house sitting but would need some details first.

Thanks Fatty'smum, i have freinds at the yard who would help out with the care side but they all work and don't really have time for the exercising.

I am quite picky about who would ride him too as i have had experience of people not doing as i ask riding wise on my horses, jumping when you have told them not to etc, and the last time i had someone ride a horse for me when i was away they got bolted with down a main road because they tried cantering toward home behind another horse when expressly told not to do this and this was someone who was experienced.

Don't get me wrong they don't have to be a gp dressage rider as i'm definately not, I just need to trust that they have common sense.

I asked a local instructor about riding my 4yr old a couple of times a week to help me and him with confidence and she suggested she could hack out with a friend on her youngster who was a bit too much for her.....no common sense, two youngsters and one with an incompetant rider, i don't think so....
