I have a 5 year old border collie bitch and thinking about getting a puppy.
Are 2 dogs easier / harder than 1?

Thinking about a jack russell

would this make a good pair or not?

My border collie is calm and well behaved

Really depends on the dogs and the capability of the owner, you are definatley looking at an easier sceanrio if your bitch is already trained and calm, as you time can be spend training the puppy and not tryig to control 2 hooing teenagers:D
I think a j.r.t would be a fine companion.
If you have the time and you take time to introduce the yougster, the little one will most liekly pick up the elders good behaviours.

Obs think doubly the insurance, vet bills, boarding fees, food (maybe not double) with a little breed:p) and time you need to give and the worry/stress of worrying about them:D

I have 10:o

2 dogs is easier (just twice the bills) as the first dog becomes less 'needy'. It's good for them to have the company and you feel less mean going out and leaving them at home. When I had one he used to come everywhere with me - now they stay happily at home :)

Of I have 4 now! 4 is no more work than 2 lol

Please note that Cayla is not a normal poster within All About Dogs, it is recognised that she is clinically insane

I would never only have one dog as I like mine to have company when I am at work, so I would say go for two, you wont regret it :)

Twice now I've read that the lone dog gets less needy-mine's getting more so, even tho he plays and gets on really well with the pups. Early days, I suppose.

The initial introductions can be scary but with patience and persistence, you'll be fine.

Cayla, seriously, ten? At home?!

Have more!!! When I was living at mum and dad's there were 11 dogs, there still are but 5 are mine, 2 will come and live with me eventually. Our saying is once you're past 2 or 3, 1 more makes no difference!!

Yes Jack Russell would be fabulous!! I'm not in any way biased towards them, owning 3!
Seriously though they're a breed that would mix with anything, we've got Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas and used to have German Wirehaired Pointers.

1 whippet x greyhound

2 all they way!! I have two collie x rescue dogs and they are brill together plus it stops you having to run about at the park as they chase each other!!

JR and Collie should work out well as they are both working dogs, my nan has a JR and he loves my 2 :)

You could always look at a rescue centre?

I took my dog down when I went when I had picked, I walked her out with him to see if she liked him, she did so we got him!! (well come on nobody likes their mother picking their friends!!)

Pancake? I like them with maple syrup-would this work?!

I'm horrified that there are no pictures! I will go and stalk your profile for pics.

And there's none-what is it with people? Every profile I've stalked tonight has no album! Get loading, please!

Oh, Cayla, it's just so good to know someone has ten dogs! My daughter and I are about to acquire Dog Number Six - a Springador pup (accidental offspring of late, brilliant, gun dog trainer's springer and his successor's black lab bitch!). New gun dog trainer has seven (and may keep a pup) and we've been desperately trying to think of someone who has as many dogs as us! The key to a "multi-dog household" is well trained dogs; I look after other people's dogs and I can honestly say that looking after other (sometimes) DISGUSTINGLY behaved dogs makes me appreciate my five little darlings! (Well, one is a spoilt brat, but the rest are PERFECT! he he!!)

Two is much better than one - and if I could I'd be like Cayla, only OH won't let me! But, APART from the dreaded bills, it's al win, win, win. The dogs are happy (after all dogs are pack animals), they give each other huge support, you don't feel such a heel if you have to leave them, especially if you're out at work, and two house dogs is a far better investment than a burglar alarm - we have reason to know - our boy and girl deterred a would-be intruder recently. And, if you're a dog, you get someone to lick your ears out for you. Funny how the humans won't do that?

Our current dog is a bitch
should we get another bitch or a dog or just what ever we prefer?

I'm led to believe that some bitches don't take to other bitches easily. If you get a dog, would you neuter both or is your bitch already neutered? I think it depends on what your current dog is like.

Can I ask those of you with lots of dogs: how do you exercise as in do you take some out then the rest? Do you walk from the house or do you go in the car? Just pondering cos we go to the woods in the car and have 4x4s and the dog walker we meet has a big van and takes out 6 or more at a time.

We got a second a few months ago, and our older dog, though not at all agressive towards the new dog, doesn't seem to have taken to him much, TBH. I think she might be jealous. I try to give her loads of attention and spend time with just her, but the new dog is 'top dog', and it seems a shame. They don't play together much, or seem particularly friendly. Maybe it will just take time - she has had us to herself for 7 years now. It is maybe different in that they don't really get left alone together - they go to work with my OH, so are with people all day. Oh well - we didn;t have much of a choice in taking the second one on - no-one else wanted him. :-(

Oh, gosh, yes - all five exercised at the same time! Sometimes it straight from the house to the nearest footpath (which runs at the back of my garden!) but more usually I bundle them into the car and travel about 400 yards down the road (if that far!) and release 'em! Like I said earlier, to have five (or more) dogs, they have to be well behaved and all of mine (touch wood!) have brilliant recall.
