Perhaps indeed, Anglebracket. That particular eta was in reference to wagtail's statement that of course less weight = faster /higher etc :)

Ditto this!! My Highland is a typical stalker's pony. Bred to be able to carry a 15stone stag of the hill. Breed standard is 14.2hh, for a reason you cannot lift 15 stone of dead weight onto a 17hh horse.

For exactly the same reasons Cleveland Bays, when they were Chapmans - pack horses stood at 15.2hh. Their weight carrying capability is phenomenal.

Dales ponies carried lead from the hill top mines into the valley bottoms over rough trails.
 
Has anyone ever seen a highland pony carry a stag off a hill?

According to wikipedia... the typical stag of scotland is a red deer and an adult weighs 30st plus.

A 15st stag is tiny in comparison isn't it?

I have! They're still used today on the Balmoral estate for that very task.
